{"id":182659,"date":"2015-07-09T22:43:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-10T03:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/07\/09\/finally-13\/"},"modified":"2015-07-09T22:43:00","modified_gmt":"2015-07-10T03:43:00","slug":"finally-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/07\/09\/finally-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Finally!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following a <b>very<\/b> long debate, and an empassioned argument in favor of removing the Confederate flag by (among others) a descendent of Jefferson Davis, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/kidspost\/confederate-flag-to-come-down-from-south-carolina-statehouse\/2015\/07\/09\/77780986-2682-11e5-aae2-6c4f59b050aa_story.html\">the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia is leaving the statehouse grounds in South Carolina<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">South Carolina\u2019s governor signed a bill Thursday that will send the Confederate flag to the state\u2019s \u201crelic room.\u201d The decision was made more than 50 years after the rebel banner began flying at the statehouse in Columbia to protest the civil rights movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Governor Nikki Haley praised lawmakers for realizing that the long-celebrated symbol is too painful to keep promoting.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThe Confederate flag is coming off the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse,\u201d Haley said. \u201cWe will bring it down with dignity, and we will make sure it is stored in its rightful place.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">State lawmakers were prompted to remove the flag by the recent killing of nine African Americans at a church Bible study in Charleston.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">South Carolina\u2019s leaders first flew the battle flag over the statehouse dome in 1961 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Civil War. It remained there to represent official opposition to the civil rights movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Rep.
