{"id":182670,"date":"2015-07-06T20:09:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-07T01:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/07\/06\/least-surprising-news-of-the-day-12\/"},"modified":"2015-07-06T20:09:00","modified_gmt":"2015-07-07T01:09:00","slug":"least-surprising-news-of-the-day-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/07\/06\/least-surprising-news-of-the-day-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Least Surprising News of the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At <i>The Intercept<\/i>, Lee Fang notes that Eric Holder has returns to his former law firm, which lobbies for corporate criminals on Wall Street.<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding Einstein&#8217;s laws, the revolving door is spinning faster than the speed of light:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/06\/eric-holder-returns-law-firm-lobbies-big-banks\/\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 120%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Eric Holder Returns as Hero to Law Firm That Lobbies for Big Banks<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>After failing to criminally prosecute any of the financial firms responsible for the market collapse in 2008, former Attorney General Eric Holder is <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/m.nationallawjournal.com\/module\/alm\/app\/nlj.do#%21\/article\/1748490164\">returning<\/a> to Covington &amp; Burling, a corporate law firm known for serving Wall Street clients.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The move completes one of the more troubling trips through the revolving door for a cabinet secretary. Holder worked at Covington from 2001 right up to being sworn in as attorney general in Feburary 2009. And Covington literally kept an office empty for him, awaiting his return.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The Covington &amp; Burling client list has included four of the largest banks, including Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo. Lobbying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/firmsum.php?id=D000021942\">records<\/a> show that Wells Fargo is still a client of Covington. Covington recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law360.com\/articles\/639645\/banks-move-to-nix-cases-in-libor-mdl-over-jurisdiction\">represented<\/a> Citigroup over a civil lawsuit relating to the bank\u2019s role in Libor manipulation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">Covington was also deeply involved with a company known as MERS, which was later responsible for falsifying mortgage documents on an industrial scale. \u201cCourt records show that Covington, in the late 1990s, provided legal opinion letters needed to create MERS on behalf of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and several other large banks,\u201d according to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/01\/20\/us-usa-holder-mortgage-idUSTRE80J0PH20120120\">investigation<\/a> by Reuters.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The Department of Justice under Holder not only <a href=\"http:\/\/billmoyers.com\/2014\/10\/01\/going-easy-eric-holders-wall-street-inaction\/\">failed<\/a> to pursue criminal prosecutions of the banks responsible for the mortage meltdown, but in fact de-prioritized investigations of mortgage fraud, making it the \u201clowest-ranked criminal threat,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/03\/13\/investigation-justice-mortgage-fraud\/6371311\/\">according<\/a> to an inspector general report.<\/p>\n<p>For insiders, the Holder decision to return to Covington was never a mystery. Timothy Hester, the chairman of Covington, told the <i>National Law Journal<\/i> that Holder\u2019s return to the firm had been \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/m.nationallawjournal.com\/module\/alm\/app\/nlj.do#%21\/article\/1748490164\">a project<\/a>\u201d of his ever since Holder left to the join the administration in 2009. When the firm moved to a new building last year, <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">it kept an 11th-story corner office reserved for Holder<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, now we know why the Obama DoJ prosecuted fewer financial wrongdoers than did the Bush DoJ.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s why I have always called him &#8220;Place&#8221; Holder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At The Intercept, Lee Fang notes that Eric Holder has returns to his former law firm, which lobbies for corporate criminals on Wall Street.
