{"id":182890,"date":"2015-05-12T18:03:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T23:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/05\/12\/this-sh-just-got-real-on-fast-track\/"},"modified":"2015-05-12T18:03:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-12T23:03:00","slug":"this-sh-just-got-real-on-fast-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/05\/12\/this-sh-just-got-real-on-fast-track\/","title":{"rendered":"This Sh%$ Just Got Real on Fast Track"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senate Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/democrats-threaten-to-stall-trade-legislation-in-the-senate\/2015\/05\/12\/08f71d66-f8c0-11e4-9ef4-1bb7ce3b3fb7_story.html\">voted against cloture<\/a>, 52-47, so the vote failed to reach the 60 vote threshold:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">President Obama collided with his own party Tuesday when Senate Democrats stalled consideration of a trade measure that would give the administration greater authority to negotiate more freely with other countries.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Senate vote was a sharp blow to the president\u2019s efforts to win approval for a new Asia-Pacific trade bill that has emerged as a top agenda item for Obama. Only one Democratic senator, Thomas R. Carper of Delaware, voted with the president Tuesday.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Administration officials and Republican leaders immediately said they would bring a measure back to the Senate floor.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">But the setback highlighted the president\u2019s failure to convince Democratic lawmakers, labor union leaders and environmental groups that the 12-nation trade deal known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership would help the U.S. economy. Obama has argued that the pact would open markets, promote better labor conditions abroad and protect endangered species and the environment. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I called both of my Senators this morning to ask them to vote now <b>and<\/b> to vote against cloture.<\/p>\n<p>For the next round, you should do the same.<\/p>\n<p>What didn&#8217;t help was Obama&#8217;s belittling, and quite frankly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/obama-warren-feud-breaks-open-as-trade-legislation-blocked-by-democrats\/2015\/05\/12\/9902f880-f8bb-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html\">chicken sh%$ dismissal of Elizabeth Warren&#8217;s concerns<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">What began with a slight jab at Warren\u2019s trade views \u2014 \u201cShe\u2019s wrong on this,\u201d Obama told MSNBC three weeks ago \u2014 has escalated into a series of daily barbs and retorts carried out on cable TV and Internet interviews, on radio shows and from the official podium at the White House.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Over the weekend, Obama used a rather harsh turn of phrase \u2014 \u201ca politician like everybody else\u201d \u2014 against Warren, who has carefully constructed an image as a principled voice in the wilderness taking unpopular political stands to help the voiceless working class.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Warren returned fire in interviews and appearances Monday and Tuesday, accusing the president of duplicity because he \u201cwon\u2019t actually let people read the agreement\u201d before Tuesday\u2019s procedural vote in the Senate. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Allies of Warren were taken aback by the personal nature of the president\u2019s remarks.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cI think the president was disrespectful to her, the way he did that. I think the president has made this more personal than he needed to,\u201d Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who has led opposition to the trade legislation, told reporters after Tuesday\u2019s vote.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Brown said that some of Obama\u2019s comments were perceived as insults directed not only at Warren but also at other Democratic opponents of the trade deal.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t heard this about Sherrod Brown, or about Bernie Sanders, or other <u><b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">male<\/span><\/b><\/u> Senators.<\/p>\n<p>The Obama administration, and Barack Obama, have a long history of being dismissive of women, with one former aide describing his administration as, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/friction-over-womens-role-in-obama-white-house-was-intense\/2011\/09\/19\/gIQA9OUygK_story.html\">This place would be in court for a hostile workplace. \u2026 Because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women<\/a>&#8220;.  (See also &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/7402101.stm\">sweetie<\/a>&#8220;)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to allowing his sexism to show, Obama also was stupid about this, because it is precisely the sort of behavior that gets every Senator&#8217;s back up.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m happy about this development, though I am concerned that I am on the same side of this as the right wing morons at Pajamas Media, who are, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/pjmedia.com\/tatler\/2015\/05\/12\/as-gop-folds-rooting-for-the-democrats-to-block-obama\/\">Rooting for the Democrats to Block Obama\u2019s \u2018Fast Track\u2019 Deal<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Truth be told, part of the nearly unanimous opposition of the Democrats for cloture is not as significant as it seems, as some of the Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/13\/business\/senate-vote-obama-fast-track-trade-deal.html\">want to attach related provisions to the vote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">According to Democratic leadership aides, Senators Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, and Chuck Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Democrat, have proposed a compromise to Republican leaders: First, hold a separate vote on legislation aimed at discouraging so-called currency manipulation by American trading partners, which could be vetoed by the president.
