{"id":182922,"date":"2015-05-04T19:40:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T00:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/05\/04\/what-the-fing-f-2\/"},"modified":"2015-05-04T19:40:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T00:40:00","slug":"what-the-fing-f-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/05\/04\/what-the-fing-f-2\/","title":{"rendered":"What the F%$#ing F%$#?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>I understand that HIV remains a major public health image, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/05\/04\/magazine_prints_entire_issue_with_hiv_positive_blood_to_combat_stigma\/\">this is nuts<\/a>:<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>The newest battle against HIV\/AIDS stigma is being waged in blood and ink. <\/p>\n<p>This month, the small Austrian magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vangardist.com\/\">Vangardist<\/a> will release a special-edition issue printed entirely in ink that has been infused with HIV-positive blood, in an effort to force readers to confront \u2014 and break \u2014 taboos that persist around the virus. The magazine, which is marketed toward \u201cprogressive\u201d urban young men, plans to release 3,000 print copies of the spring \u201cHeroes of HIV\u201d issue, a theme inspired by the three donors who contributed their blood to the project, as well as people living publicly with HIV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that as a lifestyle magazine it is our responsibility to address the issues shaping society today,\u201d Vangardist publisher Julian Wiehl <a href=\"http:\/\/saatchi.com\/en-us\/news\/vangardist-magazine-confronts-hiv-head-on-with-blood-infused-ink\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cWith 80 percent more confirmed cases of HIV being recorded in 2013 than 10 years previously, and an estimated 50 percent of HIV cases being detected late due to lack of testing caused by social stigma associated with the virus [sic]. This felt like a very relevant issue for us to focus on not just editorially but also from a broader communications standpoint.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>As Wiehl <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/to-your-health\/wp\/2015\/05\/04\/this-entire-magazine-is-printed-using-hiv-positive-blood\/\">explained to the Washington Post<\/a>, the print edition will be packaged in a sealed wrapper, so the reader must \u201cbreak the seal to break the stigma.\u201d While it is well-known that HIV can only be transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood and semen, and there is no health or safety risk posed by handling the blood-infused ink, Vangardist hopes to make a statement that challenges the public.
