{"id":183095,"date":"2015-03-15T19:49:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T00:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/03\/15\/reality-sets-in-at-foggy-bottom\/"},"modified":"2015-03-15T19:49:00","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T00:49:00","slug":"reality-sets-in-at-foggy-bottom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/03\/15\/reality-sets-in-at-foggy-bottom\/","title":{"rendered":"Reality Sets in at Foggy Bottom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Secretary of State John Kerry has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpost.com\/dispatch\/news\/regions\/middle-east\/syria\/150315\/kerry-negotiate-assad\">admitted that the US will have to negotiate with the Assad regime<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The United States will have to negotiate with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for a political transition in Syria and is exploring ways to pressure him into agreeing to talks, US Secretary of State John Kerry told CBS News in an interview.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Washington has long insisted that Assad must be replaced through a negotiated, political transition, but the rise of a common enemy, hardline militant group Islamic State, appears to have slightly softened the West&#8217;s stance towards him.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">In the interview broadcast on Sunday, Kerry did not repeat the standard US line that Assad had lost all legitimacy and had to go.
