{"id":183138,"date":"2015-02-25T19:54:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T00:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/02\/25\/ethics-for-thee-but-not-for-me\/"},"modified":"2015-02-25T19:54:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-26T00:54:00","slug":"ethics-for-thee-but-not-for-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/02\/25\/ethics-for-thee-but-not-for-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethics for Thee but not for Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that the indictment of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has provided some impetus to make changes to the ethics laws in New York state.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Cuomo has a proposal, and to no-one&#8217;s surprise, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/lovett-state-pols-ethics-package-cover-cuomo-article-1.2125601\">the proposal specifically excludes the Governor&#8217;s office<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">State legislators say they are willing to enact a number of new ethics reforms, but they argue Gov. Cuomo should subject himself to more public disclosure as well.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Republican and Democratic legislative sources say that while Cuomo has attacked lawmakers on the issue of outside income, the governor is making as much as $900,000 from HarperCollins for his recent memoir, which only sold a few thousand copies.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">They also say that perhaps there should be a ban on governors giving paid outside speeches. While Cuomo during his first four years has not given such speeches, former Govs. Mario Cuomo and George Pataki did.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">New Jersey bars governors from receiving \u201cdirectly or indirectly\u201d any compensation, salary, honorarium, fee or any other form of income on top of their regular taxpayer-funded salary.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">An official in the New York Legislature argued there should be more public disclosure on what guests, if any, are staying at the governor\u2019s Albany mansion.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">And, in perhaps the most contentious suggestion, a number of legislative sources say Cuomo\u2019s longtime live-in celebrity chef girlfriend, Sandra Lee, should be required to publicly disclose her income, investments and other financial information that the spouses of public officials are already mandated to reveal.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cA final negotiated package shouldn\u2019t be just all about the Legislature,\u201d said one high-ranking legislative official. \u201cIf you want to do something comprehensive on ethics, it should include the governor as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course it should include the governor as well.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s only a problem if you are Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>Here is hoping that US Attorney <span>Preet Bharara is going to indict him.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that the indictment of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has provided some impetus to make changes to the ethics laws in New York state.
