{"id":183209,"date":"2015-01-25T22:51:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T03:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/01\/25\/so-much-for-safe-vaping\/"},"modified":"2015-01-25T22:51:00","modified_gmt":"2015-01-26T03:51:00","slug":"so-much-for-safe-vaping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/01\/25\/so-much-for-safe-vaping\/","title":{"rendered":"So Much for &#8220;Safe&#8221; Vaping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/health\/2015\/01\/21\/378663944\/e-cigarettes-can-churn-out-high-levels-of-formaldehyde\">E-Cigs are pumping outs lots of formaldehyde<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So much for safe smokes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Vapor produced by electronic cigarettes can contain a surprisingly high concentration of formaldehyde \u2014 a known carcinogen \u2014 researchers reported Wednesday.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The findings, described in a letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine, intensify concern about the safety of electronic cigarettes, which have become increasingly popular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">He <\/span>[David Peyton, one of the researchers]<span style=\"color: blue;\"> calls it &#8220;masked&#8221; formaldehyde because it&#8217;s in a slightly different form than regular formaldehyde \u2014 a form that could increase the likelihood it would get deposited in the lung. And the researchers didn&#8217;t just find a little of the toxicant.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">&#8220;We found this form of formaldehyde at significantly higher concentrations than even regular cigarettes [contain] \u2014 between five[fold] and fifteenfold higher concentration of formaldehyde than in cigarettes,&#8221; Peyton says.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">And formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">&#8220;Long-term exposure is recognized as contributing to lung cancer,&#8221; says Peyton. &#8220;And so we would like to minimize contact (to the extent one can) especially to delicate tissues like the lungs.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, yes, FDA regulations is a good idea, and applying the same smoking bans to E-cigs as for the old fashioned cigarettes is an even better one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that E-Cigs are pumping outs lots of formaldehyde.
