{"id":183242,"date":"2015-01-18T09:22:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T14:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/01\/18\/well-i-missed-this-news-story\/"},"modified":"2015-01-18T09:22:00","modified_gmt":"2015-01-18T14:22:00","slug":"well-i-missed-this-news-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/01\/18\/well-i-missed-this-news-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Well, I Missed this News Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Were any of the rest of you aware that a few days before the <i>Charlie Hebdo<\/i> attacks, <a href=\"http:\/\/globalguerrillas.typepad.com\/globalguerrillas\/2015\/01\/saudi-arabia-on-the-edge-of-an-abyss.html\">ISIS managed to kill the Saudi general responsible for protecting the kingdom&#8217;s northern border against the terrorist group<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Last week, just before the Charlie Hebdo attack, ISIS sent a suicide  team across the border into Saudi Arabia. &nbsp;Here&#8217;s what happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <span style=\"color: blue;\"><b>The attack was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/middleeast\/saudiarabia\/11325032\/Saudi-general-killed-in-attack-on-border-with-Isil-held-Iraq.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">successful<\/a><\/b>.  &nbsp;The team found and killed the Saudi general (Oudah al-Belawi)&nbsp;in  charge of the country&#8217;s nothern border zone at the outpost he was  visiting (here&#8217;s a pic of the state funeral for some of the men killed  in the attack).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: blue;\">&nbsp;<b>The target was significant<\/b>. &nbsp;General Oudah al-Belawi  was in charge of the multi-billion dollar Saudi effort to secure the  northern border against ISIS. &nbsp;Not only has Saudi Arabia sent 30,000  additional troops to guard the northern border, it&#8217;s building a highly  automated 600-mi security wall to protect itself (lots of robots and  sensors). &nbsp;Here&#8217;s a great graphic of the monstrosity from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/middleeast\/saudiarabia\/11344116\/Revealed-Saudi-Arabias-Great-Wall-to-keep-out-Isil.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">the Telegraph<\/a>. &nbsp;My take: &nbsp;What a waste of time and effort.&nbsp; <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Here why this attack is signficant. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: blue;\">It tells us that ISIS is starting to focus on Saudi Arabia &#8211;&gt;
