He willingly put the power of his office behind lunatics who were jumping fences, calling bomb threats into elementary schools, putting bounties on Michael Schiavo&#8217;s head, and endagering great people doing wonderful work at a hospice. This episode shouldn&#8217;t be an obscure part of his past. It should define him as a politician, and as a man.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just to remind you.<\/p>\n<p>Terri Schiavo was in a persistent vegetative state, and then Governor Jeb Bush decided to intervene to prevent the removal of her feeding tube in a transparent attempt to make nice with the &#8220;Pro-Life&#8221; terrorist crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Schiavo, Terri&#8217;s husband, and the target of this obscenity, <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/election\/2014\/12\/17\/3604615\/michael-schiavo-jeb-bush\/\">has some choice words for the &#8220;smart&#8221; Bush<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/jeb-bush\/a-note-from-jeb-bush\/619074134888300\">announcement Tuesday<\/a> that he would explore a 2016 presidential bid, former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL) promised to focus on \u201cideas and policies that will expand opportunity and prosperity for all Americans.\u201d But he made no mention of his most controversial act during his two terms in office: his attempts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/23\/national\/23cnd-schiavo.html?_r=0\">take custody of Terri Schiavo<\/a> and overrule her husband Michael\u2019s decision to remove her feeding tube, fifteen years after cardiac arrest had left her in a vegetative state. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">ThinkProgress spoke with Michael Schiavo and the attorney who represented him in the matter, George Felos, about Bush\u2019s presidential candidacy. Both expressed concern that Bush\u2019s record was one of government interference and opposing individual liberty. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIf you want a government that\u2019s gonna intrude on your life, enforce their personal views on you, then I guess Jeb Bush is your man,\u201d Schiavo explained, adding, \u201cWe really don\u2019t need another Bush in office.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Though Michael Schiavo <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC259193\/\">got a court order<\/a> in 2002 to remove his wife\u2019s feeding tube \u2014 he said his wife had not wanted to be kept alive artificially \u2014 Jeb Bush intervened, pushing the state legislature to pass an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2004\/LAW\/09\/23\/schiavo\/index.html?_s=PM:LAW\">unconstitutional<\/a> bill in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptimes.com\/2003\/11\/02\/State\/How_Terri_s_Law_came_.shtml\">special session<\/a> giving him authority to order the feeding tube reinserted. When a state judge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/23\/national\/23cnd-schiavo.html\">ordered<\/a> it removed again, Felos told ThinkProgress, Bush \u201cmanipulated the organs of state government in order to try to evade the court order.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThrough the Dept. of Children and Family Services and through the Department of Law Enforcement they tried in the courts to ignore the higher court pronouncements \u2013 this was documented in an article by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/report-state-tried-schiavo-grab\/\">Miami Herald<\/a>,\u201d he recalled, though, \u201cwhen local authorities said you\u2019re going to have to go through us in order to get her, and the state law enforcement agency backed down.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to have your own personal beliefs,\u201d Felos said, \u201cIt\u2019s quite another to use your official powers and your official office to subvert the court and the lawful process.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">He also recalled that after Schiavo\u2019s death, Jeb Bush went after Michael Schiavo personally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptimes.com\/2005\/07\/07\/Tampabay\/Letter_from_State_Att.shtml\">asking the state\u2019s attorney<\/a> to investigate whether he had called 911 fast enough. \u201cIt was very odd, almost like a personal vendetta the governor had towards Michael Schaivo.\u201d The state\u2019s attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/07\/07\/AR2005070702479.html\">found no evidence against him<\/a> and closed the case. \u201cThe propriety of using your office to hunt and harass people, as the governor did to Mr. Schiavo after his wife\u2019s death, I think raises significant questions about his judgment and his character,\u201d Felos said. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Michael Schiavo, nearly a decade later, said he believes Jeb Bush\u2019s intervention was a purely political move and an act of buffoonery. \u201cIf you want a government that\u2019s gonna be intrusive and interfere in your personal life, vote for Bush. If you want to live like that, want people to interfere in your personal lives, then vote for him,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The whole Schiavo matter defines who and what Jeb Bush is as a politician and as a person.<\/p>\n<p>It should also be noted that when it became national news, the American public recoiled in horror.<\/p>\n<p>They should recoil in horror at Jeb Bush as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charlie Pierce reminds us of what he did: Jeb Bush made a family tragedy into a family horror.
