{"id":183477,"date":"2013-02-17T21:25:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-18T02:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/02\/17\/an-interesting-take-on-mali\/"},"modified":"2013-02-17T21:25:00","modified_gmt":"2013-02-18T02:25:00","slug":"an-interesting-take-on-mali","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/02\/17\/an-interesting-take-on-mali\/","title":{"rendered":"An Interesting Take on Mali"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that north Mali has something in common with the antebellum South, a pervasive and systematic system of slavery:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The insurgents who have fled from invading French troops in Mali have been taking with them some of their most important possessions \u2014 slaves.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Tuareg tribes that overran Mali&#8217;s military with the help of Arab extremist groups aligned with al-Qaeda have long held slaves and many of the captives are from families that have been enslaved for generations.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s no way to live, without your freedom,&#8221; said Mohammed Yattara, a former slave who ran away from his Tuareg masters years ago.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">&#8220;You depend on them for everything.
