{"id":183488,"date":"2013-02-14T19:25:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-15T00:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/02\/14\/surrender-your-privacy-for-the-good-of-the-state-comrade\/"},"modified":"2013-02-14T19:25:00","modified_gmt":"2013-02-15T00:25:00","slug":"surrender-your-privacy-for-the-good-of-the-state-comrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/02\/14\/surrender-your-privacy-for-the-good-of-the-state-comrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Surrender Your Privacy for the Good of the State Comrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The good folks at the Orwellian named Department of Homeland security has decided that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/threatlevel\/2013\/02\/electronics-border-seizures\/\">they can seize and search your electronics without cause<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Department of Homeland Security\u2019s civil rights watchdog has concluded that travelers along the nation\u2019s borders may have their electronics seized and the contents of those devices examined for any reason whatsoever \u2014 all in the name of national security.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The DHS, which secures the nation\u2019s border, in 2009 announced that it would conduct a \u201cCivil Liberties Impact Assessment\u201d of its suspicionless search-and-seizure policy pertaining to electronic devices \u201cwithin 120 days.\u201d More than three years later, the DHS office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties published a two-page executive summary of its findings.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cWe also conclude that imposing a requirement that officers have reasonable suspicion in order to conduct a border search of an electronic device would be operationally harmful without concomitant civil rights\/civil liberties benefits,\u201d the executive summary said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The memo highlights the friction between today\u2019s reality that electronic devices have become virtual extensions of ourselves housing everything from e-mail to instant-message chats to photos and our papers and effects \u2014 juxtaposed against the government\u2019s stated quest for national security.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Civil rights?
