{"id":183757,"date":"2012-12-01T20:04:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-02T01:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2012\/12\/01\/this-will-never-make-it-to-obamas-desk\/"},"modified":"2012-12-01T20:04:00","modified_gmt":"2012-12-02T01:04:00","slug":"this-will-never-make-it-to-obamas-desk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2012\/12\/01\/this-will-never-make-it-to-obamas-desk\/","title":{"rendered":"This Will Never Make it to Obama&#8217;s Desk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While I am heartened that the senate has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/01\/us\/politics\/senate-votes-to-curb-indefinite-detentions.html\">passed an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill to ban indefinite detention without trial of US citizens and green card holders<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Senate voted late on Thursday to prohibit the government from imprisoning American citizens and green card holders apprehended in the United States in indefinite detention without trial.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">While the move appeared to bolster protections for domestic civil liberties, it was opposed by an array of rights groups who claimed it implied that other types of people inside the United States could be placed in military detention, opening the door to using the military to perform police functions.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The measure was an amendment to this year\u2019s National Defense Authorization Act, which is now pending on the Senate floor, and was sponsored by Senators Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, and Mike Lee, Republican of Utah.
