{"id":184368,"date":"2012-05-20T21:55:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T02:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2012\/05\/20\/good-9\/"},"modified":"2012-05-20T21:55:00","modified_gmt":"2012-05-21T02:55:00","slug":"good-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2012\/05\/20\/good-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Good."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About a week and a half ago, I blogged about how the black hat orthodox community in Brooklyn has been engaging in a <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/despicable-people-heredi-edition.html\">systematic program of intimidation and harassment against people who report allegations of the child abuse to the police<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I called them despicable and evil, and I said that I hoped that the Brooklyn DA would go after these instances of intimidation.<\/p>\n<p>Well, my wish has been granted, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/19\/nyregion\/brooklyn-prosecutor-hynes-to-target-intimidation-in-ultra-orthodox-abuse-cases.html\">Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes is opening up a criminal investigation into these allegations<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: blue;\"><p>The Brooklyn district attorney, Charles J. Hynes, is setting up a panel of prosecutors and investigators to crack down on witness intimidation in child sexual abuse cases in the borough\u2019s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on NY1 on Thursday night, Mr. Hynes said he was asking the panel to \u201ccome up with some alternatives to break down this wall of intimidation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He criticized elements in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community over their treatment of sexual abuse victims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe level of intimidation is not found nearly as much in organized crime,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s extraordinary just how relentless these people can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no concern for the victim in parts of these communities,\u201d he added. \u201cEverything is for the abuser, and that\u2019s the horrible thing that we have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a shift in tone for Mr. Hynes, who in the past has praised ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders for helping to fight crime in their neighborhoods. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hopefully, this is real, and not a task force for appearances sake only.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing will change though, until we start seeing the senior rabbis behind this behavior, those with big names and many disciples, are brought up on formal charges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About a week and a half ago, I blogged about how the black hat orthodox community in Brooklyn has been engaging in a systematic program of intimidation and harassment against people who report allegations of the child abuse to the police.
