Yesterday, Virginia legislators <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2012\/02\/23\/431610\/virginia-senate-stops-personhood-bill\/\">backed away from a \u201cpersonhood\u201d measure<\/a> and the state\u2019s conservative governor <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2012\/02\/22\/430620\/virginia-governor-backtacks-offers-amendment-to-ultrasound-bill\/\">removed his support<\/a>  for an extreme ultrasound bill. Even Pat Buchanan, a leader on social  issues within the party and a former GOP presidential candidate, this  morning warned that Republicans like Rick Santorum are overreaching in  their opposition to contraception. <\/p>\n<p>On C-SPAN\u2019s <i>Washington Journal<\/i>, Buchanan described the debate over contraception as \u201cbeyond the political realm\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think if you get down into where [Santorum&#8217;s] been discussing it on the merits and demerits of contraception\u2026<b>that\u2019s a moral issue<\/b>. [&#8230;] We talked about that in college endlessly, but <b>I think you move into an area where people don\u2019t understand yet and where it\u2019s beyond the political realm<\/b>. And I think that\u2019s where Santorum has gone and gotten himself. <b>He\u2019s gotten himself tied up in some of these arguments, and I don\u2019t think he\u2019s handled them with clarity<\/b>. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>(<i>emphasis original<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that is Pat &#8220;It probably sounded better in the original German&#8221; Buchanan saying that this culture war sh%$ is a bit over the top.<\/p>\n<p>We live in strange times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You know, when Pat Buchanan is telling you that you are being too radical, you have a problem: But it seems that some Republicans think their party has gone too far.
