{"id":184684,"date":"2012-02-14T22:11:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-15T03:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2012\/02\/14\/he-keeps-coming-back-like-a-bad-penny\/"},"modified":"2012-02-14T22:11:00","modified_gmt":"2012-02-15T03:11:00","slug":"he-keeps-coming-back-like-a-bad-penny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2012\/02\/14\/he-keeps-coming-back-like-a-bad-penny\/","title":{"rendered":"He Keeps Coming Back, Like a Bad Penny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, it&#8217;s Ken Starr, and it looks like he got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/archive\/politics\/5615\/ken_starr_pulling_%E2%80%9Ca_clinton%E2%80%9D_on_a_jewish_studies_professor_at_baylor_u\">yet another trumped up investigation<\/a>, this time of a Jewish Studies professor who isn&#8217;t right wing enough for the Clinton era <strike>persecutor<\/strike> prosecutor:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: blue;\"><p>It\u2019s unclear what exactly Ellis is on trial for, as neither Baylor nor Ellis would comment on the record about the nature of the charges. (One clue: no criminal charges have been filed against Ellis.) Roger Sanders, Ellis\u2019 lawyer, says Baylor\u2019s lawyers told him the internal process mandates nondisclosure, though Baylor spokesperson Lori Fogleman disputes this, telling RD that the charges can only be released with Ellis\u2019 written permission.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders says the investigation hinges on \u201cbogus allegations.\u201d One can only hope the result will not be another 336-page Starr Report\u2014the $40 million product of the independent counsel\u2019s four-year investigation, for which the beleaguered Monica Lewinsky was interrogated over 20 times. \u201c\u2018You\u2019re a pervert, Ken Starr,\u2019\u201d Lewinsky\u2019s father once said he\u2019d like to tell the former independent counsel.<\/p>\n<p>In late November Cornel West, feminist theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and other luminaries launched a change.org petition addressed to Starr, which has thus far gathered over 5,000 signatures. The petition asserts that the controversy \u201clooks more and more like a persecution to silence a Jewish voice of dissent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe charges,\u201d reads a petition update, \u201care about \u2018abuse of authority.\u2019\u2026Many of us were contacted several times by institutional lawyers who tried to persuade us to tell them examples of \u2018abuse of authority\u2019 he has exercised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Sanders, the investigation consisted of \u201csort of announc[ing] to people, \u2018Here\u2019s what Marc\u2019s guilty of.
