{"id":185450,"date":"2014-11-15T23:45:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-16T04:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/11\/15\/more-on-that-zeppo-thing\/"},"modified":"2014-11-15T23:45:00","modified_gmt":"2014-11-16T04:45:00","slug":"more-on-that-zeppo-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/11\/15\/more-on-that-zeppo-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"More on That Zeppo Thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/Frj3tuC.jpg\" rel=\"lytebox\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/Frj3tuC.jpg\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"390\" \/><\/a>Basically, I was trying to come up with a way of holding two things together that would allow for simple installation and removal of a payload on top of a mast.<\/p>\n<p>After coming up with a number of rather ugly potential solutions, I remembered that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zeppo_Marx\">Zeppo (Herbert) Marx<\/a> had developed a clamp in his post showbiz career as an Engineer and manufacturer, developing the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marman_clamp\">Marman Clamp<\/a><sup>*<\/sup> (pictured), which found extensive use as a stage separation mechanism in space craft in addition to securing the &#8220;Fat Man&#8221; inside the B-29 &#8220;Bock&#8217;s Car&#8221; when it dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki.<\/p>\n<p>The clamp, plus a couple of pins for alignment, and I had a solution that was clean, dirt cheap, robust, and nearly soldier proof.<sup>\u2020<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, I am feeling rather smug about this.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">It appears that Zeppo did not invent the clamp, but rather he was the one to bring it to mass production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><sup>\u2020<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Nothing can be made soldier proof.
