{"id":185555,"date":"2014-10-12T19:51:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T00:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/10\/12\/what-salman-rushdie-said\/"},"modified":"2014-10-12T19:51:00","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T00:51:00","slug":"what-salman-rushdie-said","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/10\/12\/what-salman-rushdie-said\/","title":{"rendered":"What Salman Rushdie Said"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He makes a very interesting point, that whether a person&#8217;s ideology stems from the Bible, the Christian Bible, the Koran, Mai&#8217;s Little Red Book, <i>Das Kapital<\/i>, or <i>Mein Kampf<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/oct\/10\/salman-rushdie-hate-filled-rhetoric-of-jihadi-cool-is-persuading-british-muslims-to-join-isis\">no one&#8217;s idea should be free from criticism<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Salman Rushdie has attacked the \u201chate-filled religious rhetoric\u201d that \u201cpersuades hundreds, perhaps thousands of British Muslims to join the decapitating barbarians of Isis\u201d, describing it as \u201cthe most dangerous new weapon in the world today\u201d.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Speaking at the award of the PEN\/Pinter prize, Rushdie said he dislikes the word Islamophobia \u201cgreatly\u201d. But it is right, the author argued, to \u201cfeel phobia\u201d towards the oppression of the people of Afghanistan by the Taliban, towards the oppression of Iranians by the ayatollahs, and towards the death of people in Iraq today. \u201cWhat is being killed in Iraq is not just human beings, but a whole culture. To feel aversion towards such a force is not bigotry. It is the only possible response to the horror of events.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIf I don\u2019t like your ideas,\u201d Rushdie continued, \u201cit must be acceptable for me to say so, just as it is acceptable for you to say that you don\u2019t like mine.
