{"id":185615,"date":"2014-09-29T20:50:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-30T01:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/09\/29\/nope-no-partisan-politics-here\/"},"modified":"2014-09-29T20:50:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-30T01:50:00","slug":"nope-no-partisan-politics-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/09\/29\/nope-no-partisan-politics-here\/","title":{"rendered":"Nope, No Partisan Politics Here"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In another 5-4 decision split along ideological lines, the Supreme Court has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2014\/09\/early-voting-in-ohio-blocked\/\">blocked early voting in Ohio, at least until an appeals court rules<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">With just sixteen hours before polling stations were to open in Ohio, the Supreme Court on Monday afternoon <a href=\"http:\/\/sblog.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Ohio-order-9-29-14.pdf\">blocked voters<\/a> from beginning tomorrow to cast their ballots in this year\u2019s general election.  By a vote of five to four, the Justices put on hold a federal judge\u2019s order providing new opportunities for voting before election day, beyond what state leaders wanted. <\/p>\n<p>The order will remain in effect until the Court acts on an appeal by state officials.  If that is denied, then the order lapses.  It is unclear when that scenario will unfold.  The state\u2019s petition has not yet been filed formally. <\/p>\n<p>The practical effect of the order will mean that, at the least, early voting will not be allowed this week \u2014 a period that supporters of early balloting have called \u201cGolden Week.\u201d That permits voters to register and cast their ballots on the same day. <\/p>\n<p>Depending upon the timing of the state\u2019s filing of a petition for review and the Court\u2019s action on it, Monday\u2019s order may also mean that early voting will not be permitted on most Sundays between now and election day, November 4, and will not be permitted during evening hours \u2014 that is, after 5 p.m.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I will make a note here any suggestion that Justice Kennedy is anything but a partisan hack has been thoroughly debunked.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, we knew that after his vote in <i>Bush v.
