{"id":185636,"date":"2014-09-21T19:07:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T00:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/09\/21\/more-feet-of-clay-from-the-american-educational-reform-establishment\/"},"modified":"2014-09-21T19:07:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-22T00:07:00","slug":"more-feet-of-clay-from-the-american-educational-reform-establishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/09\/21\/more-feet-of-clay-from-the-american-educational-reform-establishment\/","title":{"rendered":"More Feet of Clay from the American &#8220;Educational Reform&#8221; Establishment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What a surprise, the favorite project of corporate schooling advocate, and Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/09\/race-to-the-top-for-education-a-flop-report-finds-96709.html\">is an abject failure<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Obama administration\u2019s signature $4 billion Race to the Top initiative, designed to spur far-reaching education reforms across the country and raise student achievement, is largely a failure, an analysis released Thursday concludes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Most winning states made what the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education labeled \u201cunrealistic and impossible\u201d promises to boost student achievement in exchange for prizes that were ultimately paltry in comparison with their pledges.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">But three years in, Race to the Top hasn\u2019t spurred states to address what really is behind students\u2019 poor academic performance: poverty and the associated lack of opportunities that accompany it, said Elaine Weiss, national coordinator of the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education. Her group advocates for a more targeted focus on poverty over the current slate of education reforms involving testing and accountability.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Department of Education rejected the report\u2019s conclusions, saying it\u2019s seeing promising signs of improvement in student achievement in Race to the Top states and warning that it\u2019s too early to draw sweeping conclusions.
