{"id":185682,"date":"2014-09-07T20:33:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-08T01:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/09\/07\/yet-another-reason-to-hate-andrew-cuomo\/"},"modified":"2014-09-07T20:33:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-08T01:33:00","slug":"yet-another-reason-to-hate-andrew-cuomo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/09\/07\/yet-another-reason-to-hate-andrew-cuomo\/","title":{"rendered":"Yet Another Reason to Hate Andrew Cuomo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that the Republican coup in the New York State Senate<a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalnewyork.com\/article\/albany\/2014\/09\/8551681\/another-cuomo-noninterference-story-falls-apart\">was sided by hizzoner the Governor<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Andrew Cuomo has always been careful to maintain a plausible-looking deniability when it comes to his role in keeping his own party out of power in the State Senate.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Whenever he\u2019s been asked about his involvement in the creation of the controlling Republican-Independent Democratic coalition, Cuomo has shrugged and suggested that it\u2019s not the governor\u2019s place to get involved in that sort of thing.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThis is an internal legislative matter,\u201d he has said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">It\u2019s on this basis that Cuomo has been able to put distance between himself and the coalition at opportune times\u2014such as, say, when the Working Families Party threatened to endorse someone else for governor earlier this year. And it\u2019s this distance that has allowed him (presumably) to keep a straight face as his running mate, Kathy Hochul, attempts to bolster her own Democratic credentials ahead of the Sept. 9 primary by complaining that the Senate coalition didn\u2019t achieve enough for progressives.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">But now, multiple sources with deep knowledge of the IDC and Republican conferences\u2019 dealings confirm that in fact the governor was not a passive observer during the formation of the coalition. He was \u201cdeeply involved,\u201d they say, and \u201cabsolutely\u201d encouraged the marriage that allowed the Republicans to remain in leadership even after the election of a Democratic majority. Furthermore, they say, the governor was a key player after the coalition launched, privately offering advice about tactics and messaging.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">But while the governor did not originate the idea of an actual coalition, sources say he and his staff were active in \u201cnudging\u201d it along behind the scenes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The governor\u2019s interest, say knowledgeable sources, was ensuring that Republicans had control over the agenda in the Senate, so that he wouldn\u2019t be handing over power to New York City Democrats.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThe governor and [top aide] Larry [Schwartz] made it very clear they wanted the IDC to work with the Republicans to run the Senate,\u201d one source explained.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Another recalled that there were \u201cmany, many conversations\u201d between Schwartz, Cuomo and Republican leaders.
