{"id":185728,"date":"2014-08-27T19:44:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T00:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/08\/27\/pass-the-popcorn-42\/"},"modified":"2014-08-27T19:44:00","modified_gmt":"2014-08-28T00:44:00","slug":"pass-the-popcorn-42","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/08\/27\/pass-the-popcorn-42\/","title":{"rendered":"Pass the Popcorn"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; float: right; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; text-align: center; width: 210px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" bordercolor=\"white\" src=\"http:\/\/i990.photobucket.com\/albums\/af27\/msaroff\/drama.gif\" \/><br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Pass the Popcorn<\/span><\/div>\n<p>In 2012, Michelle Bachmann accused the Ron Paul Presidential campaign of bribing Iowa state senator Kent Sorenson for his changing his endorsement from her to the Libertarian stalwart.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it turns out to be true.<\/p>\n<p>Sorenson has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2014\/08\/former-iowa-senator-pleads-guilty-to-accepting-money-to-back-ron-paul\/\">pled guilty to taking at least $25,000.00 to switch his endorsement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While this bit of of corruption may not seem significant beyond an indication that the Iowa caucuses are too corrupt and thus should lose their first in the nation status, there is actually more to this.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, it appears that Ron Paul&#8217;s 2012 campaign manager, Jesse Benton, is hip deep in this.<\/p>\n<p>How is is significant today that the campaign manager for an iconoclast&#8217;s 2012 campaign is implicated in&nbsp; bribery scandal?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Neither Lori Pyeatt, Ron Paul\u2019s granddaughter and the treasurer of his 2012 presidential campaign, nor Jesse Benton, who was Paul\u2019s campaign manager (<b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">and is now manager of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell\u2019s re-election campaign<\/span><\/b>), had responded to requests for comment at the time this post was published.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<i>emphasis mine<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>So Mitch McConnell&#8217;s campaign manager is implicated in a bribery scandal, and what&#8217;s more, it appears that he might be rolling over to prosecutors:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">It isn\u2019t clear if the investigation is continuing, but <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Sorenson has been granted immunity from further prosecution on federal and state charges, as has his wife, according to the plea agreement<\/span><\/b>. OpenSecrets.org has learned that two grand juries have been investigating the events in Iowa, one focused on the Paul campaign and one on Bachmann\u2019s. Last August, OpenSecrets.org published a copy of a memo written by Aaron Dorr, the head of the Iowa Gun Owners, in which he outlined Sorenson\u2019s demands to switch his endorsement.
