{"id":185768,"date":"2014-08-19T20:49:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-20T01:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/08\/19\/shorter-republicans-ns-shouldnt-vote\/"},"modified":"2014-08-19T20:49:00","modified_gmt":"2014-08-20T01:49:00","slug":"shorter-republicans-ns-shouldnt-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/08\/19\/shorter-republicans-ns-shouldnt-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Shorter Republicans:  N*****s Shouldn&#8217;t Vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive director of the Missouri Republican Party has <a href=\"http:\/\/takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/19\/voter-registration-in-ferguson-called-disgusting\/\">called the voter registration drive being conducted in Ferguson &#8220;Disgusting&#8221;<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Encouraging more participation in the democratic process in a community that feels alienated from political power  \u2014 hence the demonstrations \u2014 seems like an obviously good idea; and one that\u2019s particularly compelling because it\u2019s so simple. Voting is an alternative to protesting in the streets.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">And yet, the executive director of the Missouri Republican Party, Matt Wills, denounced the plan.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">Mr. Wills told the right-wing website Breitbart: \u201cIf that\u2019s not fanning the political flames, I don\u2019t know what is. I think it\u2019s not only disgusting but completely inappropriate.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">On another right-wing site, Red State, Dan McLaughlin also argued that there was something indecent about the registration drive. Ferguson presents an opportunity for \u201cRight and Left\u201d to find \u201ccommon ground,\u201d he wrote. But \u201cthe minute you turn your energies into just another effort to register Democratic voters and fire up the Democratic base in advance of an election,\u201d he argued, \u201cthe harder you make it to keep the common ground from vanishing in the fog.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In case you\u2019re wondering, Mr. Sharpton did not say that the residents of Ferguson should vote for Democrats; he said they should vote, full stop. He didn\u2019t even mention the ideological composition of the area\u2019s governing bodies; though he did mention their racial composition (lopsidedly white in a majority black community).
