{"id":185981,"date":"2014-06-26T22:31:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T03:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/06\/26\/why-you-should-not-give-money-to-the-red-cross\/"},"modified":"2014-06-26T22:31:00","modified_gmt":"2014-06-27T03:31:00","slug":"why-you-should-not-give-money-to-the-red-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2014\/06\/26\/why-you-should-not-give-money-to-the-red-cross\/","title":{"rendered":"Why You Should Not Give Money to the Red Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even if you ignore their blood products profiteering which killed a significant portion of the Hemophiliacs in the United States under Liddy Dole, you have their <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/news\/red-cross-sandy-money-secret--2\">routine and brazen profiteering in the event of major disasters<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Just how badly does the American Red Cross want to keep secret how it raised and spent over $300 million after Hurricane Sandy?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The charity has hired a fancy law firm to fight a public request we  filed with New York state, arguing that information about its Sandy  activities is a &#8220;trade secret.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Red Cross&#8217; &#8220;trade secret&#8221; argument has persuaded the  state to redact some material, though it&#8217;s not clear yet how much since  the documents haven&#8217;t yet been released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">As we&#8217;ve reported, the Red Cross <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/long-after-sandy-red-cross-post-storm-spending-still-a-black-box\">releases few details<\/a> about how it spends money after big disasters. That makes it difficult to figure out whether donor dollars are well spent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Red Cross did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/ny-attorney-general-pressed-red-cross-on-post-sandy-spending-then-retreated\">give some information<\/a> about Sandy spending to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who had been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/documents\/item\/1158817-140088-responsive-docs-pgs-21-45#document\/p14\">investigating<\/a> the charity. But the Red Cross declined our request to disclose the details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">So we filed a public records request for the information the Red Cross provided to the attorney general&#8217;s office.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">That&#8217;s where the law firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gibsondunn.com\/default.aspx\">Gibson Dunn<\/a> comes in.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">An attorney from the firm&#8217;s New York office appealed to the attorney general to block disclosure of some of the Sandy information, citing the state Freedom of Information Law&#8217;s <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Trade Secret Exemption<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The documents include &#8220;<b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">internal and proprietary methodology and procedures for fundraising, confidential information about its internal operations, and confidential financial information<\/span><\/b>,&#8221; wrote Gabrielle Levin of Gibson Dunn in a letter to the attorney general&#8217;s office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/puVLFQL.jpg\" rel=\"lytebox\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/puVLFQL.jpg\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: blue;\">If those details were disclosed, &#8220;the American Red Cross would suffer <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">competitive harm<\/span><\/b> because its competitors would be able to <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">mimic the American Red Cross&#8217;s business model for an increased competitive advantage,&#8221; Levin wrote<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<i>emphasis mine<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>Trade Secret Exemption?&nbsp; Proprietary Methodology?&nbsp; Competitive Harm?&nbsp; Business model?&nbsp; Competitive Advantage?<\/p>\n<p>Seriously?<\/p>\n<p>You are asking us to give you money on the vague promise that you won&#8217;t blow it <b>all<\/b> on salaries and severance packages for senior executives (and, you know, give thousands of Hemophiliacs AIDS \u2026\u2026\u2026 Oops, too late on that one).<\/p>\n<p>The American Red Cross, and the Susan G.
