This was a tougher job than was done in Georgia, because as I noted at the <b>time<\/b> of that invasion, there was months of Georgian preparation for their attack on Sough Ossetia, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/georgian-aggression-makes-ny-times.html\">Georgian military had been completely penetrated by the Russians<\/a>, so the Russian forces had months to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, it was all pulled together in about 1\u00bd weeks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">At first, it wasn\u2019t clear who exactly the armed men  were\u2014spotted at airports in Sevastopol and Simferopol overnight on Feb.  28. But on March 1, the Russian senate unanimously approved a request  from Pres. Vladimir Putin to use the military \u201con the territory of  Ukraine pending the normalization of the social and political situation  in that country.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The operation was <i>already<\/i>  underway. Russian forces had launched a coordinated takeover of key  sites, including airports, government offices, television stations and  the two land routes connecting Crimea to the rest of Ukraine.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">Someone <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/World-News\/2014\/02\/28\/Telecom-services-sabotaged-in-Ukraines-Crimea-region\/7611393621345\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sabotaged<\/a> Ukrtelecom, which provides phone and Internet service to the peninsula.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well executed, and John Kerry, aka the Clown Prince of Foreign Policy, has a response that is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/03\/02\/kerry_on_russia_you_just_dont_invade_another_country_on_a_completely_trumped_up_pretext\/\">jaw dropping in its hypocrisy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Secretary of State John Kerry made the round of Sunday shows this morning to condemn Russia\u2019s \u201cincredible act of aggression\u201d in Ukraine, warning Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that the country faces harsh economic sanctions from the international community.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIt is really a stunning, willful choice by President Putin to invade another country,\u201d Kerry said on Face the Nation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">But in the seriousness of the situation, the irony of Kerry\u2019s next comments may have gone missed. \u201dYou just don\u2019t in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped up pretext,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, that <b>WAS<\/b> his talking point of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Ukranians are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/mar\/02\/vladimir-putin-crimea-brink-of-war-ukraine-kerry-russia\">mobilizing their military<\/a>, and a member of their interim government, and a member of the right-wing Svoboda party, Mikhail Golovko, is suggesting that <a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/ukraine-nuclear-arsenal-threat-314\/\">the Ukraine will restore its nuclear arsenal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, this is a complete mess, and there are not a lot of lessons learned at this point.<\/p>\n<p>The only one that immediately comes to mind is that the EU&#8217;s hasty moves toward expansion work against its viability and continued existence.&nbsp; (The start of this crisis was the rejection of an EU deal intended to lead toward Ukrainian accession)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First, as in Georgia, the Russian operation was well considered and well executed.
