{"id":186610,"date":"2013-12-07T22:01:00","date_gmt":"2013-12-08T03:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/12\/07\/i-hope-that-this-will-result-in-consequences\/"},"modified":"2013-12-07T22:01:00","modified_gmt":"2013-12-08T03:01:00","slug":"i-hope-that-this-will-result-in-consequences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/12\/07\/i-hope-that-this-will-result-in-consequences\/","title":{"rendered":"I Hope That This Will Result in Consequences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/06\/world\/europe\/pope-setting-up-commission-on-clerical-child-abuse.html\">established a commission to investigate sex abuse committed by agents of the church<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In his first concrete step to address the clerical sexual-abuse problem in the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis will establish a commission to advise him on protecting children from pedophile priests and on how to counsel victims, the Vatican said Thursday.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The announcement was a forthright acknowledgment by the Vatican of the enduring problem of abusive priests, and fit with Francis\u2019 pattern of willingness to set a new tone in the governance of the church nine months into his tenure.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Whether the new commission portends a significant change in how the Vatican deals with abusive priests and their protectors remains to be seen, experts on the church said. Yet the timing of the announcement, two days after a United Nations panel criticized the Vatican over its handling of abuse cases, suggested that the pope and his closest advisers wanted to at least be seen as tackling the issue with greater firmness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Soon after he became pope, Francis directed the Vatican last April to act decisively on abuse cases and punish pedophile priests, in a meeting with subordinates at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the church\u2019s enforcement arm. But he had said little about the sexual abuse problem since.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cFrancis is great on a lot of stuff but hasn\u2019t really done anything about sex abuse cases,\u201d said John L.
