{"id":186894,"date":"2013-09-02T20:13:00","date_gmt":"2013-09-03T01:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/09\/02\/your-syria-update-2\/"},"modified":"2013-09-02T20:13:00","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T01:13:00","slug":"your-syria-update-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/09\/02\/your-syria-update-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Syria Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/Ahtj9pJ.jpg\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" \/>Well, it looks like John Kerry is seriously in the running as the worst Secretary of State of the 2000s, and since this includes Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice, this is a <a href=\"http:\/\/firstread.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2013\/09\/02\/20295307-kerry-congress-faces-munich-moment?lite?ocid=twitter\">considerable accomplishment<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Secretary of State John Kerry told House Democrats during a Monday conference call that they face a &#8220;Munich moment&#8221; as they weigh whether to approve striking Syria to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad for using chemical weapons, two sources with knowledge of the call told NBC News.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase is a reference to the 1938 Munich Pact that ceded control of part of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany &#8212; a moment that history has harshly judged as an appeasement of Adolf Hitler that preceded World War II.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seriously, invoking Hitler and Munich?&nbsp; This from the man who once asked, &#8220;How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is absolutely loathsome, and typifies the attitude of the Obama administration, which has abandoned any sense of perspective and history on this subject.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, it might be the most loathsome thing said over the weekend about this, because we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/plum-line\/wp\/2013\/09\/02\/the-mccain-doctrine-is-nonsense\/\">John McCain on the political scene<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Greg tweets:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">On CNN just now, McCain says Congress overruling Prez on a national security matter would set dangerous precedent<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">This is total, complete, nonsense, and betrays a deep lack of understanding \u2014 or perhaps a lack of support \u2014 for the U.S. political system.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">To remind Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) of the basics of the Constitution: Congress and the president are co-equal. That\u2019s true in general, and it\u2019s true of \u201cnational security matters\u201d in particular. The president is commander-in-chief, but Congress not only has the power to declare war, but also the responsibility for funding the armed forces, the diplomats and, well, everything else in the government.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It appears that John McCain cannot be bothered to read the Constitution, which vests the power to declare war <b>exclusively<\/b> in the hands of the legislative branch.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Obama administration, or at least the increasingly unhinged John Kerry has declared that, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/sep\/01\/obama-strike-syria-congress-kerry\">Obama &#8216;has the right&#8217; to strike regardless of vote<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I am appalled.  This is a position which is simply lawless, and makes a joke of both the Constitution and any Congressional vote.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what the vote is for, unless it&#8217;s just politics.
