{"id":187039,"date":"2013-07-13T22:14:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-14T03:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/07\/13\/back-loaded-bribery-5\/"},"modified":"2013-07-13T22:14:00","modified_gmt":"2013-07-14T03:14:00","slug":"back-loaded-bribery-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/07\/13\/back-loaded-bribery-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Back Loaded Bribery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you play ball with the monied people who want law and regulation structured to ensure that their wealth increases even more, then they reward you with lucrative jobs, like a high paid lobbyist, or, as in the case of Timothy &#8220;Eddie Haskell&#8221; Geithner, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaljournal.com\/politics\/former-treasury-secretary-tim-geithner-is-finally-getting-paid-by-big-banks-20130708\">absurdly lucrative speaking gig<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">During his tenure as Treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner was  constantly dogged by the belief that he was spawned from Wall Street.  This thinking was false: If you need a refresher, Geithner had actually  spent most of his career in government, and none of it at a bank. When  he left office this year, Geithner said that it would be &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/news\/intelligencer\/encounter\/tim-geithner-2013-2\/index1.html\">extremely unlikely<\/a>&#8221; for that to change.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">But as it turns out, Geithner is now being paid hundreds of thousands  of dollars by massive financial organizations. It&#8217;s just that he isn&#8217;t  being paid to work on Wall Street; he&#8217;s just being paid to talk every  now and then.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The <i>Financial Times<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/100868876\">reports<\/a>  that Geithner, like countless former public servants before him, has  hit the highly lucrative speaking circuit. He&#8217;s already made about  $400,000 in just three engagements.
