{"id":187147,"date":"2013-06-04T20:09:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T01:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/06\/04\/canada-says-nothing-is-not-an-appropriate-response-to-an-oil-spill\/"},"modified":"2013-06-04T20:09:00","modified_gmt":"2013-06-05T01:09:00","slug":"canada-says-nothing-is-not-an-appropriate-response-to-an-oil-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2013\/06\/04\/canada-says-nothing-is-not-an-appropriate-response-to-an-oil-spill\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Says &#8220;Nothing&#8221; is Not an Appropriate Response to an Oil Spill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No, seriously, the government of British Columbia just <a href=\"http:\/\/ens-newswire.com\/2013\/06\/03\/british-columbia-officially-rejects-enbridge-tar-sands-pipeline\/\">denied a permit to build a tar sands pipeline<\/a> to a company that refused to offer remediation plans for a potential spill&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Oil spill cleanup concerns have led the British Columbia Government to reject a proposed multi-billion dollar tar sands oil pipeline that the Canadian company Enbridge wants to construct across the province.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">In its final submission Friday to the federally-appointed Northern Gateway Pipeline Joint Review Panel, the province states that it cannot support the Enbridge Northern Gateway project because the company \u201chas been unable to address British Columbians\u2019 environmental concerns.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">Environment Minister Terry Lake said, \u201cBritish Columbia thoroughly reviewed all of the evidence and submissions made to the panel and asked substantive questions about the project including its route, spill response capacity and financial structure to handle any incidents. Our questions were not satisfactorily answered during these hearings.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cNorthern Gateway has said that they would provide effective spill response in all cases. However, they have presented little evidence as to how they will respond,\u201d Lake said. \u201cFor that reason, our government cannot support the issuance of a certificate for the pipeline as it was presented to the Joint Review Panel.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIt shows that Northern Gateway would have comprehensive oil spill response plans for all Project components and would substantially improve existing emergency response on Canada\u2019s pacific coast \u2013 something unprecedented for a pipeline project.
