{"id":187588,"date":"2011-05-08T20:59:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T01:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/05\/08\/a-new-firefox-and-chrome-add-on-that-i-highly-recommend\/"},"modified":"2011-05-08T20:59:00","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T01:59:00","slug":"a-new-firefox-and-chrome-add-on-that-i-highly-recommend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/05\/08\/a-new-firefox-and-chrome-add-on-that-i-highly-recommend\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Firefox (and Chrome) Add On That I Highly Recommend\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mafiaafire.com\/\">MAFIAA Fire<\/a> (note: it is listed as <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/mafiaafire-redirector\/\">Experimental on Mozilla.org<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>MAFIAA stands for the <b>M<\/b>usic <b>a<\/b>nd <b>F<\/b>ilm <b>I<\/b>ndustry <b>A<\/b>ssociation of <b>A<\/b>merica, and it redirects from sites that have been seized under conditions of dubious legality by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.<\/p>\n<p>I probably never would never have heard of it, except for the fact that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/threatlevel\/2011\/05\/firefox-add-on-redirect\/\">Department of Homeland Security demanded that Mozilla.org pull the plug in<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: blue;\"><p>The Department of Homeland Security has requested that Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox browser, remove an add-on that allows web surfers to access websites whose domain names were seized by the government for copyright infringement, Mozilla\u2019s lawyer said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>But Mozilla did not remove the MafiaaFire add-on, and instead has demanded the government explain why it should. Two weeks have passed, and the government has not responded to Mozilla\u2019s questions, including whether the government considers the add-on unlawful and whether Mozilla is \u201clegally obligated\u201d to remove it. The DHS has also not provided the organization with a court order requiring its removal, the lawyer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the fundamental issues here is under what conditions do intermediaries accede to government requests that have a censorship effect and which may threaten the open internet,\u201d Harvey Anderson, Mozilla\u2019s lawyer, wrote Thursday on his blog.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The net result of this is that the total number of downloads has gone from 6433 when <i>Wired<\/i> wrote the article to 38,560 as I am writing this.<\/p>\n<p>As JR at the <a href=\"http:\/\/stellarparthenon.org\/\">Stellar Parthenon BBS<\/a> observes, this is a classic example of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Streisand_effect\">Streisand effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m adding this to my Firefox Extension links (below blogroll on right hand column).<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t really have a need to install it, I&#8217;ve yet to run into one of the redirected sites, but it&#8217;s worth whatever small amount of attention that I can give them.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve listed their developers&#8217; reasons for this software after the break:<\/p>\n<p><a name='more'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: blue;\"><p><b>Why?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Well, in  one word: fairness \u2013 and balance of power. <\/p>\n<p>A little  while back the scumbag anti-piracy organizations like the RIAA and MPAA (Also  known as the <b>M<\/b>usic <b>a<\/b>nd <b>F<\/b>ilm <b>I<\/b>ndustry <b>A<\/b>ssociation of <b>A<\/b>merica \u2013 (jokeingly known as the)<b> MAFIAA<\/b>) &nbsp;ran to the American government whining like  they usually do and got ICE (<b>I<\/b>mmigration and <b>C<\/b>ustoms  <b>E<\/b>nforcement) involved with taking down websites \u2013 local <b>AND<\/b> foreign  websites, completely overriding the laws and rights of non US \/ foreign citizens who owned these sites.<\/p>\n<p>These  anti-piracy (MAFIAA) companies submitted a wish  list of sites that they did not like and  ICE (like good lapdogs)  started to seize those domains.<br \/>(At this  point I would like to mention (in fairness) that we are in no way affiliated  with the below sites)<br \/>Some of the  seized domains were perfectly legal, like  TorrentFinder.com which only had  links to other sites and  RojaDirecta.com which was declared to be a legal site  in Spain \u2013 <b><a href=\"http:\/\/torrentfreak.com\/sports-streaming-torrent-links-site-victorious-in-court-100510\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twice<\/a><\/b>!<\/p>\n<p><center><b><i>&#8220;Not all bad men wear masks&#8221;<\/i><\/b><\/center>          Looking at  court <a href=\"http:\/\/torrentfreak.com\/us-government-made-painful-mistakes-in-torrent-finder-seizure-101217\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documents<\/a>  it becomes obvious that ICE does not do any diligent footwork  but  takes the music and film industries word as the gospel truth, or are   downright sloppy at best.<br \/>The best  example of how sloppy and mad with power ICE  is can be is found in how they  took down 84,000 sites for 3 days&nbsp; in a   \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/news\/2011\/03\/ars-interviews-rep-zoe-lofgren.ars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mistake<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp;  These innocent sites were run  by small businesses, mom and pop garage  startups etc and for 3 days had a big  official splash page displayed to  all visitors that it had been taken down due  to <b>child porn<\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard  to bounce back from something like that and  it\u2019s a safe bet to assume a lot of  businesses \/ people went belly up  because of being wrongly accused of peddling  child porn (<a href=\"https:\/\/christianengstrom.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/27\/ifpis-child-porn-strategy\/\">something the music industry loves, by the way<\/a>).<br \/>To make  matters worse there is currently a law being drafted (called <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/Combating_Online_Infringement_and_Counterfeits_Act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COICO<\/a>) that will  make such types of domain name seizures easier.<\/p>\n<p>Enough is enough.<\/p>\n<p>There is a time to bitch and moan and there is a time   to take action &#8211; the time to be taking action has been long overdue.<\/p>\n<p>Governments around the world are either censoring for the entertainment    companie&#8217;s never ending woes or using that as an excuse to slowly get    more control over the internet for their own agendas &#8211; and trampling    over our rights in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Before it was &#8220;think of the children&#8221;, then came &#8220;the  terrorists win&#8221;   and now its &#8220;piracy&#8221;. While there were few genuine  exceptions it&#8217;s   mostly bogeymen, unicorns and leprechauns or the music  industries<a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.com\/jsp\/cc\/PubArticleCC.jsp?id=1202486102650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 75   trillion US dollars in losses<\/a> due to one companies p2p software.<\/p>\n<p>Our right to privacy  should outweigh any outdated business model,   unfortunately average  Joe cannot afford a $10,000 plate dinner to speak to his  representatives so his voice is drowned out by the vultures   who can  pay and get a politician&#8217;s ear for &#8220;business&#8221;. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s called MAFIAA Fire (note: it is listed as Experimental on Mozilla.org.)
