{"id":187621,"date":"2011-04-26T20:29:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-27T01:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/04\/26\/pass-the-popcorn-wikileaks-again\/"},"modified":"2011-04-26T20:29:00","modified_gmt":"2011-04-27T01:29:00","slug":"pass-the-popcorn-wikileaks-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/04\/26\/pass-the-popcorn-wikileaks-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Pass the Popcorn, Wikileaks Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wikileaks has now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2011\/apr\/25\/guantanamo-files-lift-lid-prison\">released about 700 documents on what is going on in the Guant\u00e1namo Bay gulag<\/a>, and the picture is one of a completely incompetent and immoral process.<\/p>\n<p>Cases in point:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wearing a cheap Casio watch was considered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandchannel.com\/home\/post\/2011\/04\/26\/Terrorism-Watch-Casio-Favored-by-Guantanamo-Detainees.aspx\">conclusive evidence that the wearer was a terrorist<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>255 Inmates were &#8220;incriminated&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/wikileaks\/8474776\/Wikileaks-255-Guantanamo-Bay-detainees-incriminated-on-claims-of-eight-inmates.html\">on the basis of the testimony of just 8 inmates<\/a>, basically whatever they could get out of jailhouse snitches and torture victims.<\/li>\n<li>Doctors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-doctors-hid-signs-of-torture-at-guantanamo-2275214.html\">actively concealed signed of torture<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given the totality it&#8217;s not the documentation, it&#8217;s not surprising that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/26\/opinion\/26tue1.html\"><i>New York Times<\/i> strongly condemned the whole process<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The internal documents from the prison in Guant\u00e1namo Bay, Cuba,  published in The Times on Monday were a chilling reminder of the legal  and moral disaster that President George W. Bush created there. They  describe the <b><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">chaos, lawlessness and incompetence<\/span><\/b> in his administration\u2019s  system for deciding detainees\u2019 guilt or innocence and assessing whether  they would be a threat if released.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<i>emphasis mine<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>It is refreshing to see the editorial page of the &#8220;paper of record&#8221; excoriate our gulag in the Caribbean, but unfortunately, they don&#8217;t go further, and ask why there have been no prosecutions of the lawless incompetent torturers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wikileaks has now released about 700 documents on what is going on in the Guant\u00e1namo Bay gulag, and the picture is one of a completely incompetent and immoral process.
