{"id":187853,"date":"2011-02-16T21:51:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-17T02:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/02\/16\/unsurprising-news-of-the-day-2\/"},"modified":"2011-02-16T21:51:00","modified_gmt":"2011-02-17T02:51:00","slug":"unsurprising-news-of-the-day-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/02\/16\/unsurprising-news-of-the-day-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Unsurprising News of the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bernie Madoff is now saying that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/16\/business\/madoff-prison-interview.html\">the banks were complicit or willfully blind with regard to his Ponzi scheme<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: blue;\"><p>In his first interview for publication since his arrest in December 2008, Mr. Madoff \u2014 looking noticeably thinner and rumpled in khaki prison garb \u2014 maintained that family members knew nothing about his crimes.<\/p>\n<p>But during a private two-hour interview in a visitor room here on Tuesday, and in earlier e-mail exchanges, he asserted that unidentified banks and hedge funds were somehow \u201ccomplicit\u201d in his elaborate fraud, an about-face from earlier claims that he was the only person involved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, however, Mr. Madoff seemed unchanged.
