{"id":187870,"date":"2011-02-11T16:11:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-11T21:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/02\/11\/mubarak-flees-cairo-soon-to-go-to-rlyeh-riyadh\/"},"modified":"2011-02-11T16:11:00","modified_gmt":"2011-02-11T21:11:00","slug":"mubarak-flees-cairo-soon-to-go-to-rlyeh-riyadh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2011\/02\/11\/mubarak-flees-cairo-soon-to-go-to-rlyeh-riyadh\/","title":{"rendered":"Mubarak Flees Cairo, Soon to Go to R&#8217;Lyeh* Riyadh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it looks like something between a popular uprising and a military coup just took place in Egypt, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/12\/world\/middleeast\/12egypt.html\">Hosni Mubarak has resigned as President and left the capital<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: blue;\"><p>Egypt erupted in a joyous celebration of the power of a long repressed people on Friday as President Hosni Mubarak resigned his post and ceded control to the military, ending his nearly 30 years of autocratic rule.<\/p>\n<p>Shouts of \u201cGod is Great\u201d competed with fireworks and car horns around Cairo after Mr. Mubarak\u2019s vice president and longtime intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, announced during evening prayers that Mr. Mubarak had passed all authority to a council of military leaders, bowing to a historic popular uprising that has transformed politics in Egypt and around the Arab world.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters hugged and cheered and shouted, \u201cEgypt is free!\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re an Egyptian, lift your head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s finally off our throats,\u201d said one protester, Muhammad Insheemy. \u201cSoon, we will bring someone good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The departure of the 82-year-old Mr. Mubarak, at least initially to his coastal resort home in Sharm el-Sheik, was a pivotal turn in a nearly three-week revolt that has upended one of the Arab\u2019s world\u2019s most enduring dictatorships.
