{"id":188168,"date":"2010-11-25T12:59:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-25T17:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/11\/25\/posting-from-the-road\/"},"modified":"2010-11-25T12:59:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-25T17:59:00","slug":"posting-from-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/11\/25\/posting-from-the-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Posting From the Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img529.imageshack.us\/img529\/5458\/samsungepicstockshot4g8.jpg\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"300\" \/>In preparation for a long Thanksgiving drive, I decided to set up my new phone, a Samsung Epic 4G, to tether to my laptop. <\/p>\n<p>It turns out that it&#8217;s disabled by Sprint, unless you want to pay an additional $30.00\/month for the privilege.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, the phone is an Android\u2122, and not, for example, an iPhone\u2122, so:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> I turned on USB debugging mode.<\/li>\n<li> Downloaded an application to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dkszone.net\/1-click-root-samsung-epic-4g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">root the phone<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li> Unzipped the file.<\/li>\n<li> Ran a batch file.<\/li>\n<li> Downloaded Google&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/p\/android-wifi-tether\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Android-Wifi-Tether<\/a> to the phone, and installed it.<\/li>\n<li> Set up the name and password.<\/li>\n<li> Turned off USB debugging mode.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, now I am posting this to you through my cell phone&#8217;s WiFi connection on my laptop while on I-295.<sup>*<\/sup> <\/p>\n<p>In any case, this reveals how a more open architecture than the Apple\/iPhone can let one take full advantage of the capabilities of the phone that you actually paid for.<\/p>\n<p>Sweet, though I still think that Android&#8217;s Calendar is kind of weak.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I am posting this from my laptop in&nbsp; moving car, and theoretically, we could have up to 4 devices attached.<\/p>\n<p>My thoughts on the phone:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The display is positively stunning.<\/li>\n<li>The touch screen, which does not require a stylus, is still not completely comfortable to me.<\/li>\n<li>Having actual multi-tasking is useful, though one has to be careful to not allow something in the background that will kill the battery.<\/li>\n<li>The keyboard is <b>very<\/b> nice.<\/li>\n<li>The camera is nice.<\/li>\n<li>Reception is much better than my Palm.<\/li>\n<li>4G coverage is kind of spotty, but it is still being built out by Sprint.<\/li>\n<li>Posting to the blog from the phone is still a pain, which is one of the reasons that I am tethering the laptop to the phone.&nbsp; The other reason is so that we could watch Youtubes and the Macy&#8217;s Parade.<\/li>\n<li>Having real GPS on the phone, as opposed to cell tower triangulation, is wonderful.<\/li>\n<li>Wifi mode chews the battery something fierce.&nbsp; If you don&#8217;t have it plugged in when using it, you won&#8217;t get much time. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">No, I m <b>not<\/b> driving, my wife is.&nbsp; I may be crazy, but I am not stupid.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In preparation for a long Thanksgiving drive, I decided to set up my new phone, a Samsung Epic 4G, to tether to my laptop.
