{"id":188189,"date":"2010-11-18T17:46:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T22:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/11\/18\/"},"modified":"2010-11-18T17:46:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T22:46:00","slug":"188189","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/11\/18\/188189\/","title":{"rendered":"<facepalm>"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; width: 400px; float: right; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/a.imageshack.us\/img443\/9375\/doublefacepalm9496114.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/a.imageshack.us\/img443\/9375\/doublefacepalm9496114.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" border=\"0\" width=\"390\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">And the Award for Lame Losers Goes to \u2026\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n<p>You know that recovery that we seem to be having, well expect it to stop, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">suddenly<\/span>, in just a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Why, because somehow or other the House Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/11\/18\/unemployment-extension-de_n_785566.html\">managed to lose a vote on extending unemployment benefits extension<\/a>, meaning that roughly <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">5 million Americans<\/span> will lose their unemployment benefits on November 30.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s 5 million Americans who will be unable to  make car or house payments of buy much of anything at all.<\/p>\n<p>Figure about $1.5 billion pulled out of the economy <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a week<\/span>, or a little bit over \u00bd% of GDP that <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">would just go away<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img175.imageshack.us\/img175\/7405\/ouch9431990.jpg\" style=\"float: right; cursor: pointer;\" width=\"200\" \/>Not only did they not manage to pass the bill, but it was <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">only a 3 month extension<\/span> that they managed not to pass, so they failed on a lame half measure.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason known only to God, they tried to pass it under a &#8220;suspension of the rules&#8221; requiring a \u2154 vote, which it failed, by 258 to 154.<\/p>\n<p>OK, I <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">do<\/span> know the reason why the Democrats tried to pass this under a procedure requiring a 2\/3 vote:  If it passes by a simple majority, then people can make a &#8220;motion to recommit&#8221;, which could kill the bill, and would not pass, or a &#8220;motion to recommit with instructions&#8221;, where it is sent back to committee with instructions to make amendments, which <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">doesn&#8217;t<\/span> kill the bill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img216.imageshack.us\/img216\/4520\/15qdr938609019.gif\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" \/>The problem is that the Democratic Caucus discipline is so lax that if the Republicans try to attach something that Democrats fear might be used in a campaign, like, for example, banning felons from getting UI benefits, then many of the Democrats, fearful for being cast as soft on crime in the next election, will vote for the measure and against the party, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and the country<\/span>, because they have no damn guts.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the reason that the Dems lost on November 2 was <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">because they have no damn guts<\/span>, so their solution is even more gutlessness.<\/p>\n<p>Cthulhu on a cruller, it&#8217;s lame.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And the Award for Lame Losers Goes to \u2026\u2026 You know that recovery that we seem to be having, well expect it to stop, suddenly, in just a few weeks.
