{"id":188202,"date":"2010-11-14T22:03:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T03:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/11\/14\/your-pentagon-in-action\/"},"modified":"2010-11-14T22:03:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-15T03:03:00","slug":"your-pentagon-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/11\/14\/your-pentagon-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Pentagon in Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US Navy&#8217;s newest amphibious warship, the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">San Antonio<\/span> Class, has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-10-28\/northrop-navy-ships-not-survivable-in-combat-u-s-defense-official-says.html\">deemed, &#8220;not survivable in combat,&#8221; in results from Pentagon testing<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Northrop Grumman Corp.\u2019s $1.68 billion amphibious warship, designed to transport Marines close to shore,<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span>wouldn<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u2019t be effective in combat and <\/span>couldn<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u2019t operate reliably after being hit by enemy fire<\/span>, according to the Department of Defense\u2019s top testing official.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The San Antonio-class vessel\u2019s critical systems, such as electrical distribution, ship-wide fiber optics and voice- communications networks, aren\u2019t reliable, according to Michael Gilmore, the Defense Department\u2019s director of operational test and evaluation. The ship\u2019s armaments can\u2019t effectively defend against the most modern anti-ship weapons, Gilmore said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurvivability\u201d for the San Antonio means the degree to which the vessel \u201cis able to avoid or withstand\u201d an attack \u201cwithout sustaining an impairment\u201d of its ability to accomplish a combat mission, he said.<\/p>\n<p>His conclusion that the San Antonio is \u201cnot survivable\u201d doesn\u2019t mean, however, that the hull and structure can\u2019t withstand a blow from an anti-ship missile due to inherent weaknesses, Gilmore said.
