{"id":188358,"date":"2010-10-14T20:35:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-15T01:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/10\/14\/economics-update-23\/"},"modified":"2010-10-14T20:35:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-15T01:35:00","slug":"economics-update-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/10\/14\/economics-update-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; width: 400px; float: right; text-align: center;\">Unemployment Claims 2008-Present<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img829.imageshack.us\/img829\/515\/weekly15136479.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img829.imageshack.us\/img829\/515\/weekly15136479.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" border=\"0\" width=\"390\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Things aren&#8217;t getting better, they are just running out of people to lay off.<br \/>H\/t <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/100665\/weekly-jobless-claims-remain-high\">The Washington Independent<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s jobless Thursday, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/07\/29\/AR2010072902223.html\">initial unemployment claims are back in the 450K-480K &#8220;sweet&#8221; spot<\/a>, with initial claims rising 13,000 to 462K, the 4 week moving average rising 2\u00bcK to 459,000, though both continuing and emergency claims fell.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing as how the number really needs to be below 300,000 for any meaningful recovery in jobs, we remain in a bad place.<\/p>\n<p>In non-existent inflation land, we saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/aspx\/stock-market-news-story.aspx?storyid=201010140845dowjonesdjonline000406\">producer prices rise 0.4% in September<\/a>, though that was largely on food, the core rate was 0.1%, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSN1324301920101013\">price of imports fell by 0.3%<\/a>, even as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-china-trade-20101015,0,6570715.story\">the trade deficit rose<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I would note here to all the free trade fetishists, we have a deflation problem in our economy right now, and most of it is being imported.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the us dollar has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/39659824\">fallen to a low for the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unemployment Claims 2008-Present Things aren&#8217;t getting better, they are just running out of people to lay off.H\/t The Washington Independent.
