{"id":188735,"date":"2010-08-05T17:54:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-05T22:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/08\/05\/economics-update-40\/"},"modified":"2010-08-05T17:54:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-05T22:54:00","slug":"economics-update-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/08\/05\/economics-update-40\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s jobless Thursday, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-08-05\/jobless-claims-in-u-s-unexpectedly-climb-to-three-month-high-of-479-000.html\">initial jobless claims rose again<\/a>, by 19,000 to 479,000, with four-week moving average increased by 5,250 to 458,500, and continuing claims fell by 34,000 to 4.54 million, though a lot of this may be people running out their string on normal benefits.<\/p>\n<p>I would note that this number has been bouncing between 450K and 480K for a few months, and that this number is around 100,000 more than is needed for a recovery in employment.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in central bank land, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/38571888\">Bank of England kept its benchmark rate at \u00bd%<\/a>, <span>effectively<\/span> 0%, and it&#8217;s asset purchase program, aka quantitative easing, aka printing money, remains essentially unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/38574841\">30-year fixed mortgage rate hit an all time low<\/a>, 4.49%.
