What are They Smoking????"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/a.imageshack.us\/img411\/4690\/gcvg.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" \/><span>BAE<\/span><sup>*<\/sup> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dodbuzz.com\/2010\/07\/28\/baes-gcv-weighs-53-tons-hybrid\/\">released its proposal for the ground combat vehicle program<\/a>, it&#8217;s a tracked vehicle with hybrid electric propulsion which weighs 53 tons in base configuration, though with bolt on armor, this can get as high as 75 tons, or more than an M-1 tank.<\/p>\n<p>That is more than 10 tons more than a T-80 tank, and about 20 tons more than a Bradley, the vehicle which it is supposed to replace, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">before<\/span> you bolt on the extra armor:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>The base version is 53 tons. Going into a highly lethal environment? Then commanders may well want their troops to bolt on modular armor and storage pods that bring the weight up to 75 tons.  Powering this vehicle that looks an awful lot like a tank, is a hybrid electric drive, technology that worries some in the Army who don\u2019t believe it is sufficiently tried and true yet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They are promising greater reliability and fuel economy, which is a lie.<\/p>\n<p>The running gear needs to be designed for <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">75 tons<\/span>, and the maintenance and fuel needs, even if marginally ameliorated by a hybrid propulsion system are going to be <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">huge<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This is just nuts.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unsupportable, and the logistical trail will be huge.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Full disclosure, I worked on the Future Recovery and Maintenance Vehicle, <span>FRMV<\/span>, &#8220;wrecker&#8221; variant of the <span>FCS<\/span>&#8211;<span>MGV<\/span><\/span><sup>\u2020<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\"> from 2003-2006 at United Defense (later <span>BAE<\/span> Systems after the Carlyle Group sold me to buy <span>Dunkin<\/span> Donuts).<\/span><br \/><sup>\u2020<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Future  Combat Systems-Manned Ground Vehicle. These are the ones that are the  tanks and <span>APCs<\/span>. As opposed to the various <span>unnmanned<\/span> vehicles, networking  technologies, etc. that form the full <span>FCS<\/span> along with the <span>MGVs<\/span>.<\/span><sup>\u2021<\/sup><br \/><sup>\u2021<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">Yes,  I have worked everywhere.
