{"id":188907,"date":"2010-07-11T14:34:00","date_gmt":"2010-07-11T19:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/07\/11\/poor-implementation-of-technology\/"},"modified":"2010-07-11T14:34:00","modified_gmt":"2010-07-11T19:34:00","slug":"poor-implementation-of-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/07\/11\/poor-implementation-of-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Poor Implementation of Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2 weeks ago, we <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/busy-day-today.html\">bought a Mazda5 mini-minivan<\/a>, a 2009 with about 36K miles on it.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, with the temperatures well over 100\u00b0, the &#8220;Check Engine&#8221; light went on.<\/p>\n<p>So, my wife calls the dealer, it&#8217;s still under warranty, after all, and is told that they cannot see her until Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I tell her to take it to our mechanic, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=100&amp;hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;safe=off&amp;as_qdr=all&amp;q=%22marks+motors%22+owings+mills&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;oq=&amp;gs_rfai=\">Marks Motors in Owings Mills<\/a>, and he puts it on a scanner, and the scan code reads, &#8220;loose gas cap,&#8221; which was probably created by a juxtaposition of an improperly installed gas cap, screwed up by yours truly, and the heat of the day.<\/p>\n<p>So, this car, which has more electronics on it than all of NORAD did in 1967, has a sensor to detect a loose gas cap.<\/p>\n<p>This is a good thing.  A loose gas cap spews pollutants into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>But still I wonder whatever possessed the designers of the car to display this as engine fault, rather than flashing something saying &#8220;tighten your gas cap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why send someone on a premature trip to the mechanic for a damn loose gas cap?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a nice car, but this is a truly bone-headed human interface decision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2 weeks ago, we bought a Mazda5 mini-minivan, a 2009 with about 36K miles on it.
