{"id":188910,"date":"2010-07-11T07:17:00","date_gmt":"2010-07-11T12:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/07\/11\/i-cannot-see-this-not-ending-up-in-submarines\/"},"modified":"2010-07-11T07:17:00","modified_gmt":"2010-07-11T12:17:00","slug":"i-cannot-see-this-not-ending-up-in-submarines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/07\/11\/i-cannot-see-this-not-ending-up-in-submarines\/","title":{"rendered":"I Cannot See this Not Ending Up in Submarines"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; width: 400px; float: right; text-align: center;\">Click for full size<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img13.imageshack.us\/img13\/1972\/img16163430.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img13.imageshack.us\/img13\/1972\/img16163430.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" width=\"390\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Pix from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperionpowergeneration.com\/\">Hyperion Power Generation<\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperionpowergeneration.com\/\">&#8216;s web site<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Hyperion Power Generation is claiming that it can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=aPeO.Ce9I64I\">mass produce a 25 megawatt reactor in the volume of a refrigerator<\/a>, 1.5m in diameter, and 2.5 m high.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the picture, this is just the reactor, and the full installation is a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">lot<\/span> larger than a refrigerator, but if you are dumping your heat into an infinite 20\u00b0C liquid, the ocean, and you eliminate the super-heating setup, since space is at more of a premium than efficiency, and I can see putting in something north of 15MW in a with a 10 foot stretch.<\/p>\n<p>Hyperion is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperionpowergeneration.com\/product-mil.html\">hawking their technology for military applications as well<\/a>, albeit for remote bases, not warships.<\/p>\n<p>I would note that their design, which uses <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyperion_Power_Generation\">convection cooling with a lead-bismuth coolant<\/a> (the heat carrying capacity of the molten metal explains the small size) sound to me like it would be rather quiet too.<\/p>\n<p>By way of comparison, a stretched Kilo would displace about 4,500 tons submerged, as compared to a Seawolf, which displaces around 9,100 tons and has a s power plant that puts out<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S6W_reactor\"> something north of 45MW<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilo_class_submarine\">Kilo&#8217;s  Wiki page<\/a> has it exceeding 20 kts with less than 5MW on batteries.<\/p>\n<p>It would probably keep the aircraft carrier battle group a few hundred miles further off a country&#8217;s shoreline during a time of heightened tensions.<\/p>\n<p>That is assuming, of course, that their numbers are not too good to be true.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click for full size Pix from Hyperion Power Generation&#8216;s web site Hyperion Power Generation is claiming that it can mass produce a 25 megawatt reactor in the volume of a refrigerator, 1.5m in diameter, and 2.5 m high.
