{"id":189078,"date":"2010-05-28T12:32:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T17:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/28\/economics-update-friday-morning-edition\/"},"modified":"2010-05-28T12:32:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-28T17:32:00","slug":"economics-update-friday-morning-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/28\/economics-update-friday-morning-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update (Friday Morning Edition)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; width: 390px; float: right; text-align: center;\">Click for full size<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img175.imageshack.us\/img175\/5829\/ehsapril20104565655.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img175.imageshack.us\/img175\/5829\/ehsapril20104565655.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" width=\"390\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Home sales up, but prices are down<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img338.imageshack.us\/img338\/9971\/ehsinventoryapril201047.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img338.imageshack.us\/img338\/9971\/ehsinventoryapril201047.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" width=\"390\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>And inventory is rising again<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Yes, I know, I haven&#8217;t been posting this regularly.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s miss was due to thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, yesterday was jobless Thursday, and initial unemployment claims fell slightly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/10768469\/1\/initial-jobless-claims-drop-to-460000.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEFI\">by 16,000 to 460,000<\/a>, which was worse than expected, with the 4 week moving average rising slightly, and continuing claims fell, though, as I frequently note, people who move from continuing claims to emergency claims fall out of that number.<\/p>\n<p>We also now know that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE63F2NT20100521\">mass layoffs rose in April<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>additionally, we are seeing more of that whole &#8220;paradox of thrift&#8221; thing, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zacks.com\/stock\/news\/34878\/Personal+Income+Up,+Spending+Flat\">with personal income rising, but spending remaining flat<\/a>, which implies that an increase in consumers buying crap that they really  don&#8217;t need won&#8217;t be our economic salvation.<\/p>\n<p>Also note that the <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/economy-watch\/2010\/05\/new_weekly_jobless_claims_drop.html\">US GDP in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> quarter was revised downward<\/a>, to an annual growth rate of 3% from 3.2%.<\/p>\n<p>I think that he Obama&#8217;s already anemic stimulus package is running out of steam.<\/p>\n<p>In real estate, the flight from the Euro has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/37315821\">pushed the 30-year fixed mortgage rate to a record low<\/a>, which, along with the recently expired home buyer tax credit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2010\/05\/existing-home-sales-increase-in-april.html\">drove existing home sales higher<\/a>, though inventories are increasing as well, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE64O35P20100525\">prices are falling once again<\/a>, which implies that a resurgence in the housing bubble won&#8217;t be our economic salvation..<\/p>\n<p>In terms of more general metrics, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/37397010\">consumer confidence index rose slightly<\/a>, as did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Business_News\/2010\/05\/25\/Activity-index-shows-above-average-growth\/UPI-29731274817278\/\">the Chicago Fed Activity Index<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagobreakingbusiness.com\/2010\/05\/chicago-fed-midwest-manufacturing-at-16-month-high.html\">Chicago  Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I just wish that the PTB were as concerned about 9.9% unemployment as they are about a twitch in the DJIA that ran for about an hour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click for full size Home sales up, but prices are down And inventory is rising again Yes, I know, I haven&#8217;t been posting this regularly.
