{"id":189121,"date":"2010-05-19T19:39:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T00:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/19\/looks-like-the-new-york-times-did-not-do-their-homework\/"},"modified":"2010-05-19T19:39:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T00:39:00","slug":"looks-like-the-new-york-times-did-not-do-their-homework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/19\/looks-like-the-new-york-times-did-not-do-their-homework\/","title":{"rendered":"Looks Like the New York Times Did Not Do Their Homework"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; width: 390px; float: right; text-align: center;\">Click for full size<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkingpointsmemo.com\/images\/mcmahon-blumenthal-sg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.talkingpointsmemo.com\/images\/mcmahon-blumenthal-sg.jpg\" bordercolor=\"white\" width=\"390\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The McMahon Campaign&#8217;s Statement, since scrubbed, that <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2010\/05\/mcmahon_campaign_takes_credit_for_blumenthal_hit_t.php\">they were the source of the story<\/a><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>And neither did I <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2010\/05\/oh-my-god.html\">when I commented<\/a> the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Times<\/span> story on Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal&#8217;s statement that he had served in Vietnam, when he actually went through multiple deferments and a stint in the reserves to stay out of the war.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the paper, and me indirectly, swallowed a piece of opposition research from a political opponent without further checking the story.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New York Times<\/span> posted a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">short<\/span> clip of his speech where he clearly said that he served in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>What they <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">didn&#8217;t<\/span> post was <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the whole speech<\/span>, where he leads off with a statement that makes it clear <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/plum-line\/2010\/05\/times_defends_posting_of_clipp.html\">that he is claiming that he simply served during that era<\/a>, not making a claim of serving in the &#8216;Nam.<\/p>\n<p>Hell, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/0,2933,593182,00.html\">even Fox News&#8217; Neil Cavuto<\/a> says that the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New York Times<\/span> did a hack job:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Blumenthal didn&#8217;t. As far as I can tell, he quite often made a point of saying he didn&#8217;t do the heavy lifting in service, just that he appreciated his Marine Reserves service and really appreciated those who did far more in service.
