{"id":189126,"date":"2010-05-18T22:10:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-19T03:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/18\/dem-primary-results-in-pennsylvania-and-kentucky-returns-in-arkansas\/"},"modified":"2010-05-18T22:10:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-19T03:10:00","slug":"dem-primary-results-in-pennsylvania-and-kentucky-returns-in-arkansas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/18\/dem-primary-results-in-pennsylvania-and-kentucky-returns-in-arkansas\/","title":{"rendered":"Dem Primary Results in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, Returns in Arkansas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s official, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/19\/us\/politics\/19elect.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all\">Joe Sestak has defeated Arlen Specter for the Democratic nomination for Senate in Pennsylvania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rather refreshingly, Specter is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wfmz.com\/news\/23601546\/detail.html\">staying relatively classy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Specter also said he called Sestak to congratulate him and tell him he thinks it&#8217;s vital to keep the seat in the Democratic Party.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t expect him to aggressively stump for Sestak, first, he&#8217;s an 80 year-old cancer survivor, and second, he lost in large part because of his unpopularity, but I expect a joint press conference in the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>And in the Democratic primary for Senate in Kentucky, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/2010\/05\/18\/1270446\/conway-squeaks-by-mongiardo-in.html\">Conway beats Mongiardo<\/a> in a close one, so the good Dem beats the faux (anti-abortion, etc.) Dem.<\/p>\n<p>In the special election in PA-12 to replace Murtha, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-503544_162-20005343-503544.html\">Mark Critz defeated Tim Burns<\/a>, which means that the Dems hold on to the seat, but Critz is the a seriously right wing Dem, rather far to the right of Murtha, who he worked for as a staffer.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, both Congressional campaign committees dumped a lot of money on this, so it&#8217;s a good sign that Critz won, and that it was not particularly close.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still to soon for Arkansas, but right now, it looks like it will be headed to a runoff, because neither Blanche Lincoln nor Bill Halter will get 50% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>As it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votenaturally.org\/electionresults\/index.php?ac:show:contest_statewide=1&amp;elecid=211&amp;contestid=3\">stands right now<\/a> it&#8217;s Bill Halter with 42.65%, Blanche Lincoln 43.26%, and DC Morrison with 14.09%, with 53% reporting, which means that Halter or Lincoln would need to get somewhere around 58% of the remaining votes to avoid a runoff, which is not going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>The only question now is who will finish in 1<sup>st<\/sup> place.<\/p>\n<p>(<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">on edit<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>There will therefore be a runoff on June 8.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s official, Joe Sestak has defeated Arlen Specter for the Democratic nomination for Senate in Pennsylvania.
