{"id":189140,"date":"2010-05-16T19:21:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-17T00:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/16\/this-and-8-95-will-get-you-a-starbucks\/"},"modified":"2010-05-16T19:21:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-17T00:21:00","slug":"this-and-8-95-will-get-you-a-starbucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/16\/this-and-8-95-will-get-you-a-starbucks\/","title":{"rendered":"This and $8.95 Will Get You a Starbucks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BP is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/17\/us\/17spill.html?hp\">claiming success at its latest attempt to ameliorate the oil spill<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>After two false starts, engineers successfully inserted a narrow tube into the damaged pipe from which most of the oil is leaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s working as planned,\u201d Kent Wells, a senior executive vice president of BP, said at a briefing in Houston on Sunday afternoon. \u201cSo we do have oil and gas coming to the ship now, we do have a flare burning off the gas, and we have the oil that\u2019s coming to the ship going to our surge tank.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll wait for independent verification, thank you very much, and BP is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/16\/us\/16oil.html?src=me&amp;ref=general\">not in the least interested in independent verification<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>BP has resisted entreaties from scientists that they be allowed to use sophisticated instruments at the ocean floor that would give a far more accurate picture of how much oil is really gushing from the well.<\/p>\n<p>So I doubt that a meaningful amount of oil is coming up to the boat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer is no to that,\u201d a BP spokesman, Tom Mueller, said on Saturday. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to take any extra efforts now to calculate flow there at this point.
