{"id":189160,"date":"2010-05-13T13:52:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-13T18:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/13\/economics-update-early-afternoon-1st-time-this-week-edition\/"},"modified":"2010-05-13T13:52:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-13T18:52:00","slug":"economics-update-early-afternoon-1st-time-this-week-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/05\/13\/economics-update-early-afternoon-1st-time-this-week-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update (Early Afternoon, 1st Time This Week Edition)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s jobless Thursday, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5gP0WrW8HAS5xFp_B_zF0N02UTt_w\">initial jobless claims fell from 448,000 to 444,000<\/a>, though it should be noted that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2010\/05\/weekly-initial-unemployment-claims-at.html\">last week&#8217;s number of 448,000 was actually revised up from 444,000<\/a>, meaning that the number is even flatter than the 4K change indicates.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, the 4 week moving average fell by 9,000, which might indicate a slight trend downward in claims, if not for the fact that continuing claims rose, indicating that this may be less a matter of the economy picking up than it is a matter of employers simply running out of people to let go.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of other metrics for the economy:<\/p>\n<p><span>Consumer confidence, at least as surveyed by Investor&#8217;s Business Daily and TechnoMetrica  Market Intelligence, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE63F2NT20100511\">has risen in May<\/a>, <\/span>from 48.7 from 48.4, though numbers below 50 indicate pessimism.<\/p>\n<p>The National Federation of Independent Business&#8217; optimism index <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/37080619\">rose to 90.6 in April from 86.8 in March<\/a>, which is firmly in the class of, &#8220;better, but still pretty weak tea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In transport and trade, we have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE63F2NT20100512\">trade deficit hitting a 15-month high<\/a>, which, while normally not a good thing, is right now, because we are well into &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paradox_of_thrift\">paradox of thrift<\/a>&#8221; territory.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, we have the always worthwhile Calculated risk reporting that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2010\/05\/ceridian-ucla-diesel-fuel-consumption.html\">Diesel fuel consumption fell slightly<\/a>, and r<a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2010\/05\/rail-traffic-recovering-at-moderate.html\">ail traffic rose slightly<\/a>, in April.<\/p>\n<p>In real estate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.housingwire.com\/2010\/05\/12\/weekly-mortgage-applications-edge-up\/\">mortgage applications are up<\/a>, but only because refinance is up, purchase applications are down, indicating that we are seeing people who are trying to lock in low rates on homes that they already own.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/publications\/news\/2010\/041.htm\">Bank  of England has decided to maintain its monetary policies<\/a>, keeping its benchmark rate at \u00bd% (effectively zero), and maintaining its quantitative easing via asset purchases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s jobless Thursday, and initial jobless claims fell from 448,000 to 444,000, though it should be noted that last week&#8217;s number of 448,000 was actually revised up from 444,000, meaning that the number is even flatter than the 4K change indicates.
