{"id":189296,"date":"2010-04-22T17:09:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-22T22:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/04\/22\/economics-update-64\/"},"modified":"2010-04-22T17:09:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-22T22:09:00","slug":"economics-update-64","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/04\/22\/economics-update-64\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s jobless Thursday, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/jobless-claims-fall-24000-to-456000-2010-04-22-83400\">initial unemployment claims fell by 24,000 to 456,000<\/a>, not as good as forecast, and the 4-week moving average rose slightly, while continuing claims fell by 40,000 to 4.65 million, though, as always, the last number does <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not<\/span> count those (like me) collecting extended unemployment benefits.<\/p>\n<p>In inflation land, we had the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/wholesale-prices-jump-07-on-higher-food-prices-2010-04-22?dist=beforebell\">producer price index rise by 0.7% in March<\/a>, giving an annual rate of inflation of over 8\u00bd%, though the year over year increase is 6%, and for the core rate, which strips out food and energy, the increase was only 0.1% for the month and 0.9% year over year.<\/p>\n<p>Of concern is the fact that food prices rose by 2.4% in March, a 26 year high.<\/p>\n<p>In real estate, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2010\/04\/architecture-billings-index-shows.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+CalculatedRisk+%28Calculated+Risk%29\">Architecture Billings Index fell<\/a>, indicating future contraction in the construction of commercial real estate, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/36683679\">mortgage applications rose<\/a>, largely on lower rates.<\/p>\n<p>In home sales, we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\/id\/36710933\">saw a 6.8% spike last month<\/a>.  This was almost certainly driven by the home buyer tax credit that is due to expire on April 20, so we&#8217;ll see what the April, and May numbers look like.<\/p>\n<p>In energy and currency, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/04\/22\/markets\/oil\/\">oil rose slightly<\/a> on good earnings reports, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=ariyDsUEt8mo\">Euro took a hit on new Greek deficit numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s jobless Thursday, and initial unemployment claims fell by 24,000 to 456,000, not as good as forecast, and the 4-week moving average rose slightly, while continuing claims fell by 40,000 to 4.65 million, though, as always, the last number does not count those (like me) collecting extended unemployment benefits.
