{"id":189383,"date":"2010-04-07T15:11:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T20:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/04\/07\/in-china-he-would-already-would-be-dead\/"},"modified":"2010-04-07T15:11:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-07T20:11:00","slug":"in-china-he-would-already-would-be-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/04\/07\/in-china-he-would-already-would-be-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"In China, He Would Already Would Be Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As would be the regulators and judges that Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship has assiduously cultivated over the years.<sup>*<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>They would have been tried, convicted, and had a bullet in the base of their skull.<\/p>\n<p>As it is, the Upper Big Branch Mine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/04\/06\/AR2010040604984.html\">where 25 miners have died and 4 are still missing<\/a>, has a long history of repeated violations, 1,342 since 2005, and 50 just last month is a case of a wealthy business owner buying off the local Mandarins, and then having a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">very<\/span> public disaster.<\/p>\n<p>This is classically a situation where the Chinese legal machinery rolls into action and does a few executions for PR.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/34331094\/\">done it to corrupt brokers<\/a>, and it appears that in this case, the model would be to execute Blankenship, the judge, and a few <span>bureaucrats<\/span> in the Mine Safety and Health Administration.<\/p>\n<p>All in all it would make the world a better place, particularly in the case of Blankenship, whose company has left a trail of avoidable mining disasters behind it.<\/p>\n<p>And then the meds kick in, and I remember that I oppose the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">He quite literally <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/conservative-wing-of-supreme-court.html\">bought a West Virginia Supreme Court justice<\/a> some years back.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As would be the regulators and judges that Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship has assiduously cultivated over the years.* They would have been tried, convicted, and had a bullet in the base of their skull.
