{"id":189459,"date":"2010-03-25T16:59:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-25T21:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/03\/25\/david-frum-fired-by-the-aei\/"},"modified":"2010-03-25T16:59:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-25T21:59:00","slug":"david-frum-fired-by-the-aei","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/03\/25\/david-frum-fired-by-the-aei\/","title":{"rendered":"David Frum Fired By the AEI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/25\/AR2010032502336.html?hpid=topnews\">been fired as a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It probably has something to do with his <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/quote-of-day_23.html\">recent comments about the Republican party&#8217;s missteps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow pariah right winger Bruce Bartlett <a href=\"http:\/\/capitalgainsandgames.com\/blog\/bruce-bartlett\/1601\/groupthink-right-would-make-stalin-proud\">actually invoked Stalin in his comments on the affair<\/a>, though he wimped out and only used the &#8220;S&#8221; word in his URL. &#8220;groupthink-right-would-make-stalin-proud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bartlett notes that the AEI &#8220;experts&#8221; on healthcare had been muzzled:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Since, he <span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">[Frum]<\/span> is no longer affiliated with AEI, I feel free to say publicly  something he told me in private a few months ago. He asked if I had  noticed any comments by AEI &#8220;scholars&#8221; on the subject of health care  reform. I said no and he said that was because they had been ordered not  to speak to the media because they agreed with too much of what Obama  was trying to do.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is noteworthy that <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2010\/03\/25\/the-break-up-frum-quits-aei\/\">Rupert Murdoch\u2019s <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Wall Street Journal <\/span>calls it a resignation<\/a>, which even the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Washington Post<\/span> did not try to foist off on their readers.<\/p>\n<p>Here is Mr. Frum&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frumforum.com\/aei-says-goodbye\">letter of resignation<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Dear Arthur <span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">[Brooks, AEI President]<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>  This will memorialize our conversation at lunch today. Effective immediately, my position as a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute is terminated. I appreciate the consideration that delays my emptying of my office until after my return from travel next week. Premises will be vacated no later than April 9.<\/p>\n<p>  I have had many fruitful years at the American Enterprise Institute, and I do regret this abrupt and unexpected conclusion of our relationship.<\/p>\n<p>  Very truly yours,<\/p>\n<p>  David Frum<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">WSJ<\/span> says that he &#8220;quit&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He has been fired as a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.
