{"id":189491,"date":"2010-03-20T20:16:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-21T01:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/03\/20\/the-face-of-the-opposition-to-repealing-dont-ask-dont-tell\/"},"modified":"2010-03-20T20:16:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-21T01:16:00","slug":"the-face-of-the-opposition-to-repealing-dont-ask-dont-tell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/03\/20\/the-face-of-the-opposition-to-repealing-dont-ask-dont-tell\/","title":{"rendered":"The Face of the Opposition to Repealing Don&#8217;t Ask Don&#8217;t Tell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former NATO <span>SACEUR<\/span>, John <span>Sheehan<\/span>, has mad the claim that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE62I1P220100319\">The <span>Srebrenica<\/span> massacre happened because the Dutch allow gays to serve openly<\/a> to the Senate Armed Services Community:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter <span>Balkenende<\/span> attacked on Friday claims by a retired U.S. general that Dutch forces were overrun in <span>Srebrenica<\/span> in 1995 because of the presence of gay soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>At a U.S. congressional hearing on Thursday on allowing gay soldiers to serve openly in the military, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander John <span>Sheehan<\/span> said there was a causal link between having homosexuals in the Dutch forces and the <span>Srebrenica<\/span> massacre during the Bosnian war.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The remarks were outrageous, wrong and beneath contempt,&#8221; <span>Balkenende<\/span> told a news conference.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So is retired General John <span>Sheehan<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>He apparently cites the general who was fired for the deaths of civilians, something that does <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not<\/span> happen in today&#8217;s US military.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that there was a far simpler reason, that there <a href=\"http:\/\/thelede.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/19\/dutch-reject-claim-that-srebrenica-fell-because-of-gay-troops\/\">were only 450 troops, armed with light weapons, deployed to protect the city<\/a>, and the man he quotes <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">denies every saying this<\/span>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Dutch television reported that when he was pressed to name a source in the Dutch military, General <span>Sheehan<\/span> said that he was basing his remarks on what someone named \u201c<span>Hankman<\/span> <span>Berman<\/span>\u201d had told him. The Dutch Defense Ministry guessed that this was a reference to Gen. <span>Henk<\/span> van den <span>Breemen<\/span>, the country\u2019s former chief of defense staff.
