{"id":189593,"date":"2010-03-07T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-07T17:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/03\/07\/your-f-35-clusterf-update\/"},"modified":"2010-03-07T12:16:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-07T17:16:00","slug":"your-f-35-clusterf-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2010\/03\/07\/your-f-35-clusterf-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Your F-35 Clusterf%$# Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The big news is that, notwithstanding the assertions of the Pentagon and Lockheed-Martin, delays continue apace, with the Pentagon Comptroller saying that <a href=\"http:\/\/defensetech.org\/2010\/03\/05\/tough-week-for-f-35\/\">the aircraft purchase will have to be cut if the cost continues to escalate<\/a>, (File that under, &#8220;Well, Duh!&#8221;) as well as concerns that the 13-month schedule slip is overly optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that this is confirmed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/2010\/03\/01\/2006706\/internal-pentagon-memo-predicts.html\">reports in the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Startlegram<\/span><\/a><sup>*<\/sup>, which, being the home town paper for the F-35 assembly line, is both in a position to be in the know, and not inclined to come out against Fort Worth&#8217;s biggest employer.<\/p>\n<p>We also have Bill Sweetman noticing in the DOD press release that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;newspaperUserId=27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Ad741de33-642c-41ac-8880-b7d8baf5ac92&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckFindCommentKey=CommentKey:fe19d595-558b-407f-b37e-f0fcded411b6#CommentKey:fe19d595-558b-407f-b37e-f0fcded411b6\">full rate production is delayed to 2016<\/a>, about a year after where it would start with the claimed 13-month slip.<\/p>\n<p>We are also seeing reports that the Israeli Air Force is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Business_News\/Security-Industry\/2010\/03\/05\/Two-year-F-35-production-delay-hits-Israel\/UPI-48011267809100\/\">extremely concerned about the delays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see a report of the bald-faced lying by Lockheed and the Pentagon, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A7e61ba31-384d-4677-a4c2-83cf081f9559\">where they claim that everything is hunky dory<\/a>, but it makes one inclined to invoke Samuel L. Jackson from <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Pulp Fiction<\/span>, &#8220;Does Marsellus Wallace look like,&#8221; because they are seriously f%$#ing with us.<\/p>\n<p>We also have non-movement, basically heat but no light on the F136 alternate engine, with the Defense Department releasing a report saying that adding a 2<sup>nd<\/sup> engine was &#8220;cost neutral,&#8221; only the study did not address the value of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hedging risks.<\/li>\n<li>Greater responsiveness from contractors as a result of competition.<\/li>\n<li>Providing alternate growth paths.<\/li>\n<li>Industrial base preservation.<\/li>\n<li>Potential for innovation from a 2<sup>nd<\/sup> contractor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The DoD wants to cancel the F136 because they want the plane in deployment before Congress realizes how expensive it is.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting note is that the Memorandum of Agreement <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;newspaperUserId=27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3Add8c551f-29ca-4a6e-9090-1436c715ef8d&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckFindCommentKey=CommentKey:1dda1e2e-09ef-4875-8698-17344bc82bd1#CommentKey:1dda1e2e-09ef-4875-8698-17344bc82bd1\">specifically allows participating nations to choose the F136 engine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One should note that the Pentagon&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/blogs\/the-dewline\/2010\/02\/f-35-alternate-engine-faces-12.html\">estimate of development costs are twice that of GE\/Rolls Royce&#8217;s<\/a>, and this has led the Chairman and leadership of the House Armed Services Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/blogs\/the-dewline\/2010\/02\/f-35-alternate-engine-faces-12.html\">to call bullsh%$ on the report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size:78%;\">The <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fort Worth Star Telegram<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The big news is that, notwithstanding the assertions of the Pentagon and Lockheed-Martin, delays continue apace, with the Pentagon Comptroller saying that the aircraft purchase will have to be cut if the cost continues to escalate, (File that under, &#8220;Well, Duh!&#8221;) as well as concerns that the 13-month schedule slip is overly optimistic.
